Hi all,
Just got my 2.7 Tip S a week ago. I got the 2.7 because it was newer and had less miles, and I figured I could have fun working on it with the money savings.
So, my goal is to upgrade the car, but for under 5k. I already got a new Pioneer headunit, so my only other interior upgrade for the time being will be a sport steering wheel which will run about 1k. That leaves about 4k.
I was thinking about the following, but need help figuring out which ones will be the best, and hoping not to void my warranty too much. I'd like to take this on the track as well, but it is my everyday car.
1) New Exhaust (Remus, Borla, etc): ~1500
2) De-Snork: FREE!
3) New air filter: ~100 (I hear this one might not be good for the car)
Sorry, I know this is covered a lot, but I am curious what everyone here thinks. Maybe new tires (I have the 18'' cayman s)?
Thanks for any input!
Mike
Borla
BORLA PERFORMANCE INDUSTRIES is the leader in the design and manufacture of stainless steel performance exhaust. We began two decades ago as a manufacturer of exhaust systems for such "concours classics" as Rolls-Royce and Ferrari cars and have evolved into the premier manufacturer of today’s performance vehicles for the street, off-road, and racing.
However, what is a "2.7 Tip S" ? Is it a 2.7 Cayman or a 3.4 Cayman S?
If you are primarily interested in just increasing the engine performance, then the best bang for your buck is probably a plenum/throttle body/DME reflash and free-flowing exhaust.
Many of us are happy with the race plenum and software sold by Softronic. Exhaust choice is largely a matter of preference based on sound, price, style, etc., since I think most cat-backs are going to produce about the same gains.
I would not worry about changing tires at this point - the OEMs are very good. If you get bitten by the track bug, then you may want to invest in a separate set of track wheels and tires anyway.
I agree with casselberrykman - spend some of your money on a couple of DEs - you'll have a great time and get some valuable instruction.
Plenum
The plenum is the piece that goes between the Cayman throttle body and the intake runners. The factory piece is a long black plastic tube with a divider down the middle. There are aftermarket replacements which are designed to allow the air to flow easier/faster into the engine and increase horsepower and torque.
Softronic
SOFTRONIC produces DME programming and hardware to suit your companies specifications. Our current software suite is a complex matched set of programs housed in a Flash Manager and Flash Client. This software is matched with two cables, an End User and Master Cable. The SOFTRONIC proprietary flashing solution outperforms all other combinations in speed and accuracy including the factory Porsche equipment.

+1 on all that -- I personally have Borla, but a bit hard to get right now. For track, you may want to get some pads and GT3 brake cooling ducts from Rennstore. For flash, look at some pedals - I used Ultimate.

It's a 2.7 Tiptronic S. I guess i should have just said 2.7 Tip
I do plan on taking some driving lessons - I was fortunate enough to work on a TV pilot with a guy who a porsche racing instructor and professional driver. It's something I will certainly do.
Remus - yes, I do plan on ordering an exhaust from you, but you're website only lists an exhaust for the S. And, it seems a little high at 1763. Are there any resellers who sell it discounted?
Can someone explain what the software upgrade does? What else do I need (I don't have the standard PCM unit)?
Where do I get a race plenum (softronic's site doesn't list anything like that)? What is a throttle body? What is a DME reflash?
Sorry for all the questions - I did search for answers, but there wasn't much i could find. Thanks in advance - this has been a huge help!

Mike..Cool User Name .. Are you refrencing Cliford the dog ? anyway Do you have the Sport Chrono? I have been working on my 2.7 for some time now trying to Squeeze the most I can possibly get from out 2.7 liters. I can tell you my car is considerably faster then when I bought it stock and have been VERY satisfied with the results.
FIRST.. Yes Exhaust For the $$ My personal Opinion is the Remus Or Borla ,you will hear and feel a BIG difference in you car .almost like driving a different car and you cannott go wrong with either of these top choices(Its your personal taste and choice). But there are lots of great aftermarket exhausts to choose from and personally I have Not heard one that I did not think was worse then the rather Quiet Stock exhaust so there is a HUGE decision there.
2nd.Softronic Flash and Racing Plenum .This is a no brainer (you can also add the sport feature if you do not have it) gives you BETTER throttle response a great BONUS!! and Scott @softronic is a great guy to work with.
3rd.de-snorkle,its fun and cheap(Look it up in this forum) there is a how to in the Articles section
4th.K&N Air filter
Underdrive pully (Maybe later)
And Thats It .Thats about all you can do to a 2.7 staying under 4K and getting the most HP you can possibly get. I have NOT dynoed my car yet as I am too cheep so I really do not know the increase in HP and Tourque But is a heck of a lot faster and a lot more fun of a car ..Cheers to ya
Thats It !! Now you have a
Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
