"We are not doing any performance upgrades."
How can a seemingly firm decision change in the span of a year of ownership? Thanks to a bit research, some spirited autocross experience, and an active upgrade community on CaymanClub.net there was no other way to move but forward... and fast! Aside from my first modification to the Cayman, a B&M Short Shifter, most of the upgrades to our 2007 2.7 Cayman have been for looks (clear side markers, etc.) or convenience (remote key.) So, why get a catback? Because Mommy definitely wouldn't like it? To save on that ever rising gasoline bill? To wake up the neighborhood a bit? For efficiency sake? I am no way near using the horsepower I have, I mean, why would we want to "upgrade" perfection? We have a Porsche after all - shouldn't it be perfect already?
***Picture of our Cayman 2.7
Perfect is a weighty term when considering a Porsche, and an endless subject for debate. One may say that a Porsche is perfectly designed within a certain set of limits and regulations - if those rules were not in place, a Porsche Cayman would likely be designed in a significantly different manner. Let's take the exhaust system, for example: in order to meet TUV*, EC** and a variety of other stringent regulations, the Porsche OEM Cayman exhaust was designed with a primary and secondary sets (4) of catalytic converters as well as a reverse flow design muffler, or silencer. Gasses expelled through the exhaust are forced through two sets of cats and then passed forward and backward through baffles in the muffler. The OEM system reduces emissions and noise, but also decreases the velocity gasses are able to travel through the system, which in-turn causes air flow backpressure. The Cayman in effect has a stuffed-up pipe, a congested exhaust, if I may.
Catback exhaust systems install after the catalytic converters - thusly "cat-back" - and take the place of the car's OEM exhaust system. Catbacks are mainly designed to reduce backpressure, and increase the speed of the flow of gasses exiting an engine. Many modern day after market exhaust specialists are able to do this safely and efficiently, using high quality tested materials and advanced design, and increasing the horsepower output of the engine. The Remus catback exhaust system is a prime example, with solid Austrian quality and stainless steel construction throughout. This system deletes the second set of OEM catalytic converters (Caymans have 4), replacing weighty OEM pipe-cat-pipe-muffler with pipe and a straight through resonator, and ending in a true dual exhaust. The Remus system's straight through design enables less back pressure, a reported 91%, and customers have dynographed performance gains of up to 21 horsepower (5-7% gain.)

Remus Catback System Specifications
* ~$1,763.00
* Secondary cats are deleted, no Check Engine Lights (CEL)
* Weight: Remus 17kg (37.48 lbs - shipped as 40lbs) vs OEM 19kg (41.89 lbs)
* Body Material : 304 SS inside and out, straight through design, fully polished
* Tips Material : 441 SS chrome plated, extra resistant to corrosion and scratches, shiny finish, 2x3.54" tips
* Warranty : lifetime unlimited mileage
* Performance: up to 21hp due to reduced backpressure of 91% over OEM
* Mandrel bent and TIG welded
* NOT TUV/EC Approved, which means it is not street legal (in Europe)
* NOTE: This exhaust now features a pre manufactured bend on one connector tube to clear the suspension and thus stay away from any rattling, weld breaking problems! This does not affect the performance as the 21hp gain was dynographed with the manufactured dent.
* NOTE: Not TUV/EC approved and without Catalytic Converters - As the US has less restrictive regulations on sound and emissions, the primary set of two catalytic converters is all that is needed to pass emissions, and is usual practice to remove for aftermarket upgrade.
* NOTE: Without homologation - Some countries like European countries, Japan, Singapore etc. require the homologation limits while countries like USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa etc. do not have these sound limit restrictions.

The Remus Catback Exhaust System for the Porsche Cayman is a quality, solid piece of hardware, from a reputable company, that delivers a consistent percentage power increase (5-7% hp) and backflow decrease (-91%) - the Remus Catback is a safe, fast and sound system...
It was a dark and foggy night in San Francisco - from the living room one could hear incessant revving, as if breath, again, again. First one slightly tinny, smallish set of revs, and then another bold basey rev, full of expanding, round tones. The pattern repeated, and each time the reaction was the same on the face of the girl bathed in computer screen light: concentrating, she frowned and considered her options, but as the resonant Remus sound clip came around for its turn she grinned like a five year old on her first pony ride, every time. Furrowed brows, silly grin, squint of consideration, grin of glee.
That was the night before I left on a CaymanClub.net Zone 7 meet and greet trip in Mammoth, California, the night I heard word. I would soon be working with The Racer's Group on the installation of a Remus Racing Sport Label Exhaust System on my Cayman! After hearing such news, five plus hours drive behind a Cayman S with an aftermarket exhaust (Milltek) takes on a completely different tone. I drove through Yosemite and the Sierras daydreaming what my new exhaust would be like - would I feel it rumbling as I drove down the road? Would I notice the power? Would the drone be overwhelming? I had no idea what the Remus would be like actually installed.
Luckily I had two aftermarket Cayman exhausts to meet that weekend to keep me contained until I met TRG.
***Picture of 4 Caymans at Mammoth Meet
***Sound from Stock Cayman, Stock Cayman S, Tubi exhaust with Speed-Art dual tips, and Milltek Cayman S
Comparing the four exhausts side by side was an eye opening experience - the aftermarket exhausts were deeper and throatier, sounding more resonant and full. Would the Remus sound more like the Tubi - strong, bold and relentless - or more conservative and underlying silky smooth like the Milltek? Driving the Milltek was as consistent and suave as it sounded, but I was uncertain if this was exemplary of the difference between a Cayman S and Cayman. I then drove the Tubi Cayman and noted a way punchier throttle response than in my Cayman. Just an exhaust? No more upgrades, really? I was more intrigued. And the sound, I could not escape the Tubi sound, especially in the cockpit - with the Tubi, one is completely encased in a deep, dark purring.
What would the Remus be like?
I would know in less than a week.
Upon arriving home from the mountains I prepped for more driving - this time not for astounding views and comradeship, but for sound. I planned to attempt to capture something of the spirit of the exhaust with a videocamera, external microphone and a few different experiences: the essential Cockpit Mic, capturing what the driver themselves would hear when driving residential streets as well as highway; the Driveby Mic, allowing the view of the bystander (beside, who doesn't want to drive their Porsche by a microphone and camera setup?); and the Bumper Mic, captured with an microphone attached inside a bumper vent, close to the exhaust tip(s.)

Soon it was install time and we were off across the Golden Gate Bridge and North to The Racer's Group's workshop wonderland. To a novice autocrosser like me, it was absolutely inspiring to have a guided tour around TRG's facilities, and amongst their GT3 race cars.
Spending time with TRG's Kjell, Scott and Peter offered a lot of information - these guys were ready to answer any question thoroughly, with a smile and a tour. In the rush to Mammoth and back, I realized I had some frustrating scheduling conflicts with the install. The TRG team went out of their way to ensure the install would go smoothly - these guys came in on a holiday and a weekend, to open their shop for dropoff and pickup - no impersonal "drop your key in the mail slot and make a wish" here.
The Racer's Group (TRG) Information (TRG / The Racer's Group. Professional Racing, Club Racing, Porsche Parts.)

The parts weighed in my hands with quality - this bolt-on, highly-polished system was going to fit right in with the rest of my Porsche. I nodded approval and settled in for the wait. Even though the install only takes about two and a half hours, we were scheduled to pick her up on Saturday - four days of toe tapping and teaser e-Mails, "The exhaust turned out great - no details until Saturday!"

Mods4Cars
Mods4cars was founded in 2002 with the idea to add a highly demanded feature to the otherwise almost perfect Porsche Boxster: Comfort One-Touch roof operation while driving at slow speeds. The resulting product offered not only that, but also allowed quick and easy installation by just swapping out a relay box, thus leaving no traces and no permanent changes on the vehicle. The first smartTOP roof controller was born.

When the Cayman was revealed, the first thing I noticed was the impressive and incredible new look. With highly polished cylindrical tips, the tailpipe really popped out of the background and adds a curved accent to the round, sculpted rear of the car. I was also delighted to note the "Remus" imprint is much more subtle and discrete than I thought it would be. The tips themselves were a bit bold and flashy straight out of the box, but on the install they fit in to the overall picture quite nicely. Also to note is the ability of the Remus system tips to be fully adjusted to be parallel and even with each other - no cockeyed tips here.
Surprisingly the tips were not the only change in appearance - the back bumper vents now glowed with reflective light as highly-polished steel mufflers winked out on either side of the tips. Again, a more subtle effect than one would expect from such mirror-polished pieces, but once situated in the muffler nooks they are snug and only peek out to tease of even more interesting things to come.
Interesting things like the hungrier, more dramatic sound. This system is not one you want to bring home and introduce to Mom, at least not until she gets used to the idea a bit. The Remus is loud and to be noticed, but it is also refined. Not afraid to be heard, the Remus bounces rumbles off the walls in a dignified, clean way. Starting the car is now an excited, deep growl which settles to a rumbling purr in the back of her throat upon idle. The sound is more exotic and rounded, fitting in perfectly with a Porsche. Every gear reinvents and restates itself with bold and unmistakable aftermarket crescendos. Flat six symphony indeed, with an amp.
Well, what about drone? There is a definite resonance in the lower range RPMs if under load. This was a specific point I attempted to capture on the comparison videos attached below. Once I adjusted to a slightly sportier, more aggressive rev before shift, I actually found it a little difficult to consistently reproduce. Drone means "downshift" or "accelerate in your current gear," for me that was one of the principles of learning to drive stick. Listen to your car, feel the engine - if you have too much drone, it may indicate you need to play with your shifting until you find a better balance that works for you. I can imagine drone being a concern if you tend to drive at low gear and RPM in heavy traffic, but then driving a stick in heavy traffic is always an adventure. (I would be interested to hear from someone who drives an automatic with aftermarket exhaust in heavy traffic.)
I also noticed a sound I had not heard before, a distinct fluttering, sucking noise when let up off the gas. Likely this sound, or reversion, was present with the stock exhaust as well, but the aftermarket exhaust amplifies it. Reversion is caused when you take your foot off of the accelerator and a small vacuum is created in the system. This forces air to move backward into the intake manifold, taking with it a small amount of gasoline. The gas ignites and minor backfires make the popping noise as the muffler is loaded and emptied. Upon acceleration, the sound is replaced by a resounding purr or a growl, depending on the RPM and the gear.
The Cayman Remus Exhaust looks and sounds fast - but how does it feel to drive?
With the Remus Exhaust system, the HP kicks in with a distinct pull, especially when traveling to 3.5k RPM and beyond - it feels more powerful and noticeably different. Part of the pickup process was a series of interviews for the attached TRG Remus installation video, and as they wanted genuine response, the dynos were not revealed to me until after driving the car. In this case the butt-dyno rang true, and even this novice could feel the distinct difference in power and aggressive response in the 3k-5k RPM range.
The throttle feels more responsive, as if there is less hesitation in the connection of gas to go. This tighter response seems to exist across the board - the Cayman jets off of the line and agilely climbs up the RPMs with and gears like a panther. As the throttle is more responsive, driving feels more precise, especially when down-shifting to accelerate.
This is in a 5-speed Cayman 2.7 - the feel in a Cayman S would be even sharper. Horsepower gains from the Remus are related to a percentage (5-7% gain) - the more HP in the system to start, the more one is able to get out of the Remus Exhaust. This is clearly demonstrated in the three dyno pulls attached below.
Stock HP 105.49 123.78 147.89
Remus HP 111.54 +6.05(5.74%) 132.39 +8.61(6.69%) 155.73 +7.84(5.30%)
Notes:
- 3k RPM was run the same exact as 3.5K RPM so it is out of comparison
- Stock Hp/Torque ratings from TRG dyno are approximately the same as the Modacar dyno, just shown for car break-in comparison
Overall, the Remus Catback Exhaust system is a must listen to, must drive, must see kind of system. This exhaust is for those who want to be seen - and heard. It has an expensive, well-built look and feel, and really pulls through gear climb all the way to the top, then settles in for the long haul at a moderate sound level. This exhaust has character and a base-heavy musical flow. The car is not only ready for the track, it is nipping at heels to get there.
The Remus, comparatively, is one of the louder systems I have heard, significantly louder than stock but with refined, sophisticated edge. If you like the more throaty aftermarket exhausts, you will love the performance, classy look and purr of the Remus.
p.s.
I cannot wait to try out my new Remus Exhaust in autocross!
What's Next? -
* Take our Cayman out for a spin at the Autocross, and use that HP right in the mid-range.
Also plan on recording a future AX for more sound comparison, as I have a few stock recordings already.
* Look in to rounding out the Remus exhaust system a bit with an ECU Flash.
* Update my CClub.net profile and signature with Remus Catback information!
** Stay "Tuned" **
Ever want to flip a cayman over and look at the soft underside? TRG, Adobe Road Winery and the Cayman Club (Zone 7) are teaming up in December to do just that! Well, not really flip one over, but put a couple of our cars up on the lifts; learn about suspension, exhaust, and ask questions; all while sampling wines from Adobe Road Winery. There are still a couple of details that TRG is finalizing - keep your eyes on the Zone 7 CaymanClub.net forum for the exact date and time.
