How much for install?

I just called my dealer today about how much to install a stock short shifter and they said with the 10% tequipment coupon it would still be over $800. I haven't worked on a porsche before but I done transmissions in Evo's and Honda's so I'm just wondering if anyone installed the stock shifter themselves and the technical difficulty.

Check out the articles section. There is an article on removing the center console and an article on installing the EVO short shifter. I believe that installing the stock short shifter is simpler since the stock short shifter is more complete and does not re-use much of the existing stock shifter. I will be doing this install my self soon as well.

There is a tech article on how to install the short shifter right here on this site. Look at the articles. I still have to post some hints on the disasembly of the rear center console, the hardest part of the job. the actual installation of the original Porsche Short Shifter is a piece of cake. Can't say the same for the rear center console. If you have the time and some mechanical inclination you can do it with the how to article here. Allow at least 3 to 4 hours of your time. After you have done it once you might be able to do it in 2 hourst or less. The short shifter is worth the effort weather you install it or the shop.

Good luck

It's not too hard to do, but your dealer wants way too much to do it, do you have another dealer within reasonable driving distance? My dealer charged 1.5 hours for the install or about $150. Sounds like that is the Porsche 'book' rate. You might ask your dealer how many hours they are charging since you know Porsche lists 1.5 for the job.

Dealer charged me $500 for parts and installation. You shouldn't pay more than $600, so I would check around as others have suggested.

My dealer is about an hour away but the next dealer is another hour away....I'm probably going to do it myself just so I can spend some extra quality time with my croc but I might change to a painted console what do you guys think about Basalt Black Metallic on Black interior.

I'm installing the GT3 rs brake ducts when they come in hopefully this week.

This is insane....order your Cayman with SS for $765, or have it retrofitted after delivery for $500-600 by your dealer. Makes no sense to me. I guess I'll be ordering my '07 without the SS kit. Plus, if I have it done after delivery, I'll still have the regular shifter parts to switch back to if I want.

so if you order the ss with your car it is installed at the factory and not at your local dealership? I always wondered if that $765 was just for the ss, and whether I would be paying my dealer additional $$$ to install it.

So the ss kits that everyone is getting after the fact are the same as what is installed at the factory? yet cheaper? are we sure they are the exact samething?

fuserchris,

Did you read the install article? Yes it is the same, part # and everything shows it. This is a rare Porsche option that is actually cheaper to do post-purchase (provided your dealer doesn't jack the install price)

Forgive me for being a bit naive, but what's the point? 6-8HP? You could spend well over $5,000 for an additional 20-35HP (intake, exhaust, chip, install). Why not just go whole hog and drop in a new engine? The ultimate cost per HP will be much cheaper. I'm reminded of a guy I know, a-hem, who bought a nice mountain bike. Then over the next couple of years spent as much money on new components as he did for the bike. At the end of those two years, he sold the upgraded bike for less than he paid for the original bike, to go and purchase what he really wanted in the first place. Everyone loves to tinker with something. Speaking for myself, a guy who likely wont track my Cayman, and am smart enough not to street race, I love the CS as it is -- a class-leading
