RUF has certainly been around for a while. They have a great name and brand recognition and the customers pay for this. However, there is not a great amount of innovation going on (they dont need to! they started the Porsche tuning scene!)
It should be noted that there are only three Manufacturers on the above list. 9ff, RUF and Gemballa.
What drew us to acquire the USA 9ff distribution rights was the sheer number of accomplishments they have had. Comprised of engineers from RUF and Brabus amongst others, 9ff is only 5 years old. However, they know that to prove their mettle - they had to throw down the glove and produce results.
If you want spoilers and rims there are many choices - all subjective styling tastes. However, when it comes to power - there is only one name to consider - 9ff.
They broke the mclarensF1stop speed record in an 840HP Gt3, they have set numerous benchmarks. Their excellent Cayman CR42 has already delivered knockout punches to the other euro tuner's best efforts, while Sport auto conducted a test of the CR42 vs a 997 GT3 - the results were not pretty there either (the GT3 got the bloody nose!)
Where many of the above listed tuners are using a standard X51 3.8L motor, 9ff uses their own 3.8L or 4.1L motor which is stronger than a GT3 motor and features a wealth of innovative technology - TI connecting rods, Oval pistons, 8800 rpm, enlarged valve with TI valves, an enhanced track-worthy oiling system...the list goes on and on.
Sure, their products are not inexpensive - but its the result of a complete analysis and re-engineering of existing components. They frequently design their own high strength parts to replace components that they determine will/may fail as they raise performance. The end result is that everything is completely over-engineered and built to last.
There areseveral companies out there who produce products of questionable quality and cover this up with slick marketing, pretty pictures and fake dynos. 9ff is the realest deal out there when it comes to perfomance as several other tuners (no names mentioned) actually use 9ff engines in their 'showcars'. Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. There will be several 9ff enhanced cayman on our shores very soon. Watch them closely to understand the difference between real performance and pretty pictures...
That said, if what you desire are 22' wheels, large spoilers and carbon fiber interior pieces...9ff should not be your tuner of preference. However, If you -like many discerning Porsche enthusiasts demand maximum performance without destroying your car's reliability, smoothness and inherent Porsche character - you will find that the 'list of tuners' becomes MUCH shorter.
