Has anyone installed and used one of these? How do they compare to the factory short shifter (which is supposedly 20% shorter than stock)?

I'm curious about this too. Some rumors say that B&M and factory is the same, or at least that B&M makes the factory one.

What about labor, I casually inquired at the dealer and they said it's 3 hrs aat $120 per hour. I thought that was insane at best.

Find another dealer or independent. ONE hour is all it takes by an experienced pro. Many folks add this when we supply a painted rear console since the console does come out during installation.

You can do this yourself in about 90 minutes if you desire. Link for detailed instructions is here:

http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf

As for how it functions, on my 996, the throw from 1st to 2nd was just over 5" for stock, 3" for B&M.

B&M does make the factory unit for Porsche, but there are differences. The factory part ($700?) comes in its own tower with bushings. For the B&M, you pop the bushings out and use the hardware from B&M. Hard to go back to stock, but few ever do. Once you try the B&M, it's night and day compared to the long throw of the stock shifter.

Eric --

Thanks for the link to the installation instructions, doesn't look that difficult.

However, I have yet to see anything "official" that indicates just how much the B&M shifter shortens the shift throws. Using your numbers above, that implies a 40% reduction in shift throw (from 5" to 3"). Is the reduction only in fore-and-aft movement, or does it also shorten side-to-side movement? The factory shifter kit claims only 20% shorter, and I'm concerned about going too short.

Thanks,
Bill

Hmmm. Anyone out there try this? It all looks ok, except for adjusting the cables. Seems like the kind of thing I'd screw up. On the other hand, the whole project looks kind of fun.

Does anyone know a good shop in Houston? (In the event I chicken out - or worse, need to be bailed out).

Regardless Eric, I think you've sold me.

Swancoat - the articles section here has an installation of another make of shifter that gives you an idea of the things that have to be done. I'm sure it is much different with this one but you get some idea by reading this:

Cool thanks. I've seen that, but still find it sort of intimidating. Regardless, I've ordered the shifter, so we'll see how it goes when it gets here.
