I would think you could recoupe a nice chunk of cash by selling your 3.4L engine. There are lots of 2.7L Boxster owners that would love to have that engine put into their car.

"Orton Cayman R-380
I am the elusive owner of the Cayman S 3.8 conversion by Orton Performance. I have driven the car approx. 1000 miles since picking it up in Atlanta on 7/17. To date there have been no issues with this conversion-no check engine light etc. It behaves exactly like stock until you floor it - then all hell breaks loose. The car is very quick (not quite as fast as my 996 Turbo) & the exhaust sound from 5000 rpm & up is unreal. It uses stock mufflers but only two 100 cell cats.

objectuser - Upgrading a base Cayman might be a way to save some money, but if I was putting that kind of HP into that car, I'd at least want to have the "S" brakes, and some of the other more heavy-duty components that come on the Cayman S.

Yeah, I need to go read the differences between the base and the S. If the base doesn't have the four piston calipers, then that's a very good reason, yes. It's $10k between them though. I should see what can and can't be added.
If a person started with a base cayman instead of an S to build a 3.8 cayman, he/she would have to get the optional 6 speed as well. i have no idea what it costs.

Why does one need a 6 speed? It should work with any transmission IMHO.

Okay, from the Porsche web site, it seems that both models come with the four piston calipers. Is there another difference with the brakes?
anyone who is thinking about the conversion between the s and base should take the base cayman because you can afford it. otherwise you would not do that modification. I think if you do have more power you should get better brakes anyways cause you will be going in those corners a bit faster. If I am wrong will someone please explain.

Do you mean to say,

Otherwise, I'm not sure I understand.
It does appear, however, that both the base and the S come with big brakes (I looked at the model comparison on porsche.com), so I think either one would fit the bill there.
