Custom Designed Graphics – Where Does One Go ?

I want to add a graphic to my car - but, I don’t want it to be on the car all the time. I was thinking a static cling vinyl application… however, I cannot find a firm to do the work. Does anyone know of a company capable of producing one-off decals like the one I have produced here?

Furthermore, I’m wondering why I don’t see much more of this type of product other than on city buses? I would think that this type of mod would be in high demand: one could have a carbon fiber hood when they wanted, place advertising and even racing appliqués: imagine running around the track with the faux endorsement stickers of say Lucky Strikes or Target or not – but, you know what I maintain.

Maybe we should start a business…? Any ideas?

Mitchell

If you pick up a copy of grassroots motorsports, in the vender list they have graphic design and sales listed. They list about 5 so you should be able to find something that you like.

Would a static cling stay on the vehicle at speed?

Would one of those magnetic signs, so beloved of real estate agents, work? Probably anything could be printed on one.

Not to be rude or anything, but IMO the decals you speak of are tacky and give the impression that the owner is more of a poser than anything else. Applying a decal to give the impression that your hood is made of carbon fiber completely defeats the purpose of having a carbon fiber hood in the first place - weight savings. Same thing goes with fake sponsor stickers or decals for equipment that isn't even installed on the car. It'd be just like putting a 'turbo' decal on a normally aspirated car - it doesn't make the car any faster, so what is the point? Like this fake Ferrari F355 'turbo'. Talk about spoiling an otherwise beautiful car:

There are already plenty of companies out there that make decals and posers who'll buy them.

If you go into the Cayman Shop (link at top of page) and click the Cayman decals page you can contact the vendor that makes them for us and he can custom make whatever you want for your car. While some of what you mentioned isn't what I would do, I realize each person has their own tastes and it is your car so do as you like!

Custom Graphics

I actually draw graphics for dealerships. I just completed a GT3 graphic (without the RS) for the new cars coming in. Magnetic signs will come off at speed. The trick is to have an electronic file that any sign shop could use to print/cut vinyl with. They do have a temporary vinyl that you could buy that is still pretty durable.... and I can do anything you want. A custom electronic file will cost $500. Also I have vinyl cut similair to the RUF graphic (EXCELLENCE magazine) coming from the right rear tail light, up over the wheel arch. That is $100. Any color. Easy to apply yourself.

Thanx!

Thank you all for your opinions and ideas! I found a place (signspecialist.com) that will build an inexpensive static cling decal that they guarantee will stay on the car at any sustained speed of less than 200mph. At the same time, I received two telephone calls from companies that want me to design some more automobile appliqué concepts for them. The idea has legs!

If your talking about adding a Turbo sticker on the car and its not a turbo ... true

If your talking about adding a vinyl graphic that might stand out like some sidestripes saying "CAYMAN S" ...
to each their own.

Graphics look great on some cars like Elise and MINIs. They look like hell on others.

I would imagine there being two camps on this RE: Porsche and I am NOT advocating one camp over the other.

Camp 1 - you NEVER EVER add anything to detract from the way the Porsche Factory delivered the car (including those body kits If Ferry Porsche wanted the car to have a wide-body ... the factory would have made it that way

Camp 2 - Take a look at all the Caymans in a dealer lot. Say you got 5 red ones ... they look ... red. Clones of each other. Now add a tasteful side stripe to one.... NOW you are unique and not a clone of all the rest.

I guess it depends upon which camp you want to be in.

Perfect - I'm in Both Camps !

Yes - now I can be in both "camps": I can be in either camp as the "stickers" I am thinking of building can be installed or removed in under an hour - that’s the beauty of static cling decals and the concept....
