Some of the old 356 Porsches (forget the model ... CRS... 356 Carrera 1500-S maybe?) used roller bearings. Were a killer to rebuild. Little needle rollers all over the floor. Eventually even Porsche figured with improved machining and oil, there was no benefit.

I'm sure some old Porsche types could tell you more than you'd ever want to know about this.
