Adjustable brake pedal

I found the brake pedal way too high; too high for just driving around town because you had to put the seat back too far, and too high for a good, consistant heel/toe. So, I had the pedal lowered....something I did to a 996 about four years ago. A local P-Car specialty shop peeled back the boot around the pedal shaft just where it attaches to the master cylinder and sure enough there was a set screw. My target was lower by 0.75", they just dialed that in, presto. Nothing too tough. MUCH better, much more comfortable, and perfect downshifts. Only problem now are the crappy pedals....but I've a set of real pedals on order this week.

Just an idea....

Thumbs up

Good info. There have been a few previous posts complaing about pedal placement. This may help rectify some issues.

That sounds like a great solution to what seems to be a common complaint. Is there any danger of the pedal bottoming out under heavy braking?

Interesting. This may be a long shot, but is there any way to remove the brake pedal shaft at the point where the set screw is located?

Being able to do this would make drilling holes and installing aftermarket pedals much, much easier. I ended up with a nasty backache and neck pain for about a day after I installed my Rennline pedals, from having to contort my torso and head underneath the steering column.

Phredden, have you tried any threshold braking and heel/toe shifting. My pedals for my style of heel/toe seem to be good. I would think that if you lowered the brake pedal, you would be hitting the gas way too soon if threshold braking and heel/toe shifting at the same time.

Jayman, et al...I have not brought this car out to a track yet, althou I intend to do at least one PCA event with it in '07. I have a BMW track car...I can not afford to bend the Cayman (!) or the 996 before it....it's an old ('93) beater that's cheap to fit junk yard fenders to if needed! So, I can't say definitively that this brake pedal location will be ideal under track/ threshold conditions. I lowered the brake pedal on my 996 and BMW track car, and in both cases it worked fine. (American lawyers have insisted upon an ever higher brake pedal in the US due to the Audi fiasco in the late '70s...a case of idiots confusing the brake for the throttle.) I'm a PCA instructor and have never had a problem with a nice, low, easy to heel and toe brake pedal, but this is a personal decision. It's what I find ideal, but it might not be for everybody. But I have to say, that so far this is the single biggest improvement to the car I've made so far. And, it's completely reversable.
