Question New 2006 Cayman S

Is it unsual to have a new 06 cayman s still for sale at invoice and if so. Would it still be ok after basically sitting there 2 yrs? The salesguy said its new etc.. it was just posted under the pre-owned by mistake. I wonder why its been unsold so long? Any ideas?

Porsche of North-Olmsted | Pre-owned Vehicle Info

What kind of prices are the 07's going for now on CS's?

I'd personally be concerned about a vehicle that has been in that type of environment (shown in the picture - cold/hot/humid area) for 2 years and only have 51 miles on the engine. I would be worried about corrosion internal to the engine, suspension, drive train, etc. as well as rubberized parts that will probably have lost a significant amount of their useful life. Any parts requiring lubrication have likely dried since this car clearly hasn't been driven.

If all of this checks out, engine would require a major breakdown to check definitively, then I would insist on new tires and a new battery.

I would not touch this car unless it were well below invoice with a full warranty and it have gone through a prebuy inspection by a Porsche expert that you hire (not paid for by this dealership). I'm very conservative when it comes to this sort of stuff - comes from buying and selling airplanes with engines that have just sat for a couple of years without running and have personally seen the damage that this does due to corrosion unless kept in an environmentally controlled low humidity enclosed area with the engine turned over regularly to keep everything lubricated).

There are still a few unsold 2006s out there. This isn't that uncommon. Once the 2007s are out, lots of folks will shy away from the 2006 that's on the lot unless the dealer is willing to get 'crazy' with the price, which they usually aren't real willing to do.

I'd say you have some real leverage on that one, especially since the 2008s are hitting inventory.

It would be unrealistic for me to not point out that if you do buy a 2006, there may be a few first years issues you may have to deal with. In 2006 these included
  • A noisey oil pump valve piston (easy fix),
  • The trunk clunk issue (there has been an update and this can be easily fixed)
  • Cat converters that kicked 'check engine' lights.
  • Pressure plate bolts that lossen up
The first three can be easily applied before you take delivery, all under warranty, just ask the dealership to do so if they haven't already. The last issue requires too much labor and affects a small number of cars, so you will have to just take your chances here. But if you should develop a problem, all will be made good under warranty.

Other considerations are:
  • TPMS was optional in 2006, so the car may not be equipped with it.
  • Cobalt Blue cost $3,090 in 2006, $690 in 2007
  • Lapis Blue cost $810 in 2006, $3,090 in 2007
The 2006s are great cars and haven't shown any 'major' issues. Go get it, and get a great deal in the process.

Good luck

The car in the picture has sport design wheels, but the listing doesn't indicate any options and it's listed at the price of an optionless Cayman S. So either the picture is wrong or the car actually comes with a bunch of options not listed and is cheaper than MRSP. I guess you are saying it is actually listed at invoice?

The car has sport crono., sport steering wheel, headlights. Its tough to say what else. The car also might not be more than about a year old depending on when it was made, check the door sticker. I would offer them not more than 50. And make sure the warranty in service date is when you would buy it. Also if you have the warranty any engine problems would service if you drive the car regularly.

Well he's supposed to send me more info on it after the labor day weekend. So I guess I'll know more then. I agree that the price should be lower for a car like this. And probably have to be checked out closer.

Thanks for all the replies.
