A 24mo. Cayman lease is only a 58% residual? Isn't the residual supposed to be an indication of how strong the car holds its value? My Volvo lease has a 72% residual for a 24mo. lease with 15k miles/yr. I must not be understanding something because a Volvo does not hold it's value better than a Porsche ... does it? Can somone help explain this to me, I've only leased one time and need help here.

72% is a very high residual - especially if the car was purchased with some discount off MSRP - with 10% off sticker that would imply less than 20% depreciation which is how much the car depreciates by just driving it off the lot...

That had to be a heavily subsidized lease - BMW finance rates are comparable to Porsche's

My negotiated price was $450 over Invoice. MF was 0.00077. So yes, I received discount from MSRP and very aggressive MF (I'm sure this was subsidized by Volvo Finance). I believe I received a very good deal.

I'm surprised the Cayman has such a low residual after only 24 months.

Does Volvo compute residual off MSRP or selling price?

Residual is total of MSRP (Base + Options + Destination Fee).

If you did not such a great deal, would you have leased the Volvo? I guess, no. Now you know why they have to do this. Porsche does fine, without throwing a bunch of cash at the buyer. High residuals and low money factors when fiananced through the manufacturer are just less cheesy cash back offers.

I will bet that at lease turn in, you will be able to turn the car in, and buy an identical lease return for thousands under residual.

You are correct on all points. After scanning all vehicles that fit our needs/wants, the 3 finalists were the Q7, X5, and Volvo. The Volvo had the nicest & most comfortable interior - especially the 3rd row option which was a high factor for us. The engine/drivetrain was the weakest of the three but it's for my wife and she loves the exterior/interior design. Once the Lease details were layed out the decision was extremely easy. The Q7 was a serious contender but we had to buy an extra $8 in options just to get the power rear hatch that my wife wanted. Ridiculous.

1. Q7 (nicest, but options-structure made it $10k more for what we wanted and Lease details were weak).
2. X3 (Body style getting old and no 3rd row)
3. Volvo (Nicest, most comfortable interior

i've owned a few volvo station wagons, and last year bought the wife an X3 because notwithstanding my secret love for the v70R bodystyling, my experience of ownership militates against me ever buying a volvo again. i owned my last one for about 6 months, during which a different "check engine" or other idiot light would come on at an average of just under every 3 weeks.

total pieces of ****. i've been favorably impressed by the build quality and hardiness of the x3, on the other hand. i hope you have a better experience in your volvo than i did!
