Planning on purchasing Cayman / S this fall in US and importing into BC, Canada.
Considering low mileage 2007 MY but would prefer 2008 MY.
RIV Canada states:
2008 AND 2009 BUMPERS: All passenger car U.S. models (Boxster, Cayman, 911 variants) do not comply with CMVSS 215 (bumpers). In order for these vehicles to be brought into compliance with CMVSS 215, the two impact pipes (part # 996 505 019 01) and their mating two desk pad impact absorbers (part # 996 505 775 00) that support the rear bumper have to be replaced with the Canadian specification impact absorbers (part # 996 505 015 01) and desk pad impact absorbers (part # 996 505 775 01).
In other words, it seems that a component of the rear bumper for 2008 and 2009 MY Boxsters, Caymans and 911s differ between the US and Canadian market.
My questions are:
Is this really true? I have read elsewhere that the parts are the same but the part numbers differ between the two markets.
Secondly, if the parts are indeed different, does anyone know how expensive it is to do the US to Canadian conversion and whether or not it is a big job?
Thirdly, Porsche NA told me on the phone yesterday that warranty on a US-Porsche car will be honored in Canada. I understand, however, that US dealers have been told not to sell to Canadians although I have read that some will still do so. Does anyone have experience of dealers in the Pacific Northwest who will do so?
You will need to purchase a vehicle that has been titled in the US, or title it yourself somehow in the US if you want to buy a new vehicle. Any used (titled) vehicle is easy to bring over.
I imported a MY 07 so the bumpers were not an issue, I understand the parts are approx. $200, I'd try and arrange the installation with the dealership as part of your sale. Also have them activate your daytime running lights.
I bought from a dealership in California. If you are planning on driving the car home to BC then California would not be my first choice. CA DMV took an exceptionally long time to issue a title in my name (just over 4 weeks to deliver) Also you can not pick up the car in CA unless you pay the state sales tax.
In my case I had the car trucked to Nevada and drove home from there, not that expensive just a bit of a hassle. Buying from a dealership did save me from applying to PCNA for a clearance letter, just get a printout from the dealership.
Next time I would simply allow more time for all the paperwork to sort itself out, or insist that the dealership use the 72 hour expedited service for the title. Everything else in the process was easy, once I had the title I crossed the border and had all the certifications done in about two days.
Good news for Canadians wanting to buy 2008/9 MY in US
Bumper harmonization will take effect on 25 June 2008.
I have just been informed by the assistant to the Canadian Minister of Transportation.
In other words, 2008/9 MY 911 variants, Boxster and Cayman models supplied for the US market will not require bumper modification to comply with Canadian regulations after that date.
911 variants, Boxster and Cayman models require replacement of several (I believe three) rear bumper components in order to comply with Canadian impact regulations. This is has new rule for MY2008/9 models (and may well reflect Porsche NA's attempts to stifle US to Canada imports).
This harmonization should be reflected in the RIV (Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicle) requirements for vehicle compliance, presumably very soon after the Canadian legislation is altered.
I have approached all four dealers in WA state. They all keep to the party line regarding not selling untitled cars to Canadians but there is enough low mileage second hand inventory out there that I should imagine I'll find a suitable car reasonably quickly.
Incidentally, as posted elsewhere, the assistant to Canadian Transportation Minister today told me that bumper harmonization will be passed on 25 June 2008.
The question is how quickly RIV's information will be updated accordingly.
Weissach in Vancouver quote approx $450 for the parts and labor for the bumper conversion....
