Re-titling in WA state for export to Canada - need advice...

Need some advice from forum members in WA state.

I'm located in BC in Canada and am wanting to purchase new in the US.

Have found at least one dealer who is happy to accept payment from me and title the car to a US citizen friend of mine who lives in WA.

The car will be transported to WA and I will then have to re-title through the WA DMV. Their website seems to suggest that changing over the Title will take two weeks. Does that sound right?

Also, I will need to present the new Title plus a bill of sale at the US border when exporting. Which brings me to the next problem: I will have paid for the car so my name will be on the original Bill of Sale - will it simply be sufficient to show this at the border or will the Customs guys have a problem with the fact that although my name is on the original Bill of Sale, it was not on the original Title?

Any ideas...

The two week wait is best case, I recently retitled a car here in WA and it took almost 5 weeks for the paperwork to show up in the mail. Though if you go to the DMV with your friend I belive they can give you some sort of temporary paperwork indicating that the title transfer is in process. I don't know if that will be adequate for crossing the border though, might try contacting Canadian Customs?

I would start here....

Vehicle Importation from the United States

...and you may want to double check on the need to retitle the car in Washington State. It may not be necessary - perhaps it needs to be registered in Washington, but not retitled. I don't know that if that is the case, I just feel it's worth checking out.

Correct 5 weeks is the normal wait. My sister is in the process of importing a 2008 Cayenne.
If you go through a dealer, usually they will take care of the US paper work.

Which state is the car being purchased in? If you're having your friend title it in WA I think you'll be paying a fair bit of sales tax. I'd try and title the car in the original state of purchase and have him sign it over. No need to have a new title re-issued in your name. Send an email to US customs in Blaine with your question, they are surprisingly helpful.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm making some progress - I understand that there is no need for me to get the vehicle re-titled by the DMV - I can simply have the Title signed over to me.

But this has got me thinking: Why can't I pay dealership, let's say in Texas, for the new car, have it Titled to my US friend who lives in WA state, have the car shipped by the dealership to WA where I will meet it and take it straight to the border with the signed-over Title without ever having dealt with the WA state DMV?

And if I can do this, what happens about sales tax? Since I am not registering the car in WA state, because the vehicle is going straight for export, do I completely avoid sales tax?

Yes, you pay the dealership, the car has to be titled to an American if new, to the state that they reside in, your case WA. A title will be issued in his/her name and then they will sign it over to you, no need for a re-title from the DMV. As far as state tax, it is paid at the rate in which state the car is registered in, must be paid, can't avoid it unless you title/register the car in a no tax state.

This is sad but true, if you are buying a new car, you have to pay the sales tax (whatever it may be) in the state it is registered in, even if you plan on exporting it.

I was issued a California title without paying sales tax. I believe you can have a car titled in Texas without paying sales tax as long as the vehicle will be leaving the state. Anyone from Texas have a more definitive answer?

The car was used but the dealership went to the DMV and retitled the car in my name. As long as the car was delivered outside of CA no taxes were paid. I was looking into a vehicle in Texas and I believe there is a tax exemption for vehicles leaving the state.

I think it's a little different for used vehicles anyway, especially if they are destined to be exported, no state tax req'd. I was told, new cars where ever they are titled that that state tax is to be apllied and to which county the registered person lives, county to county tax loading can differ. But used cars leaving the country get a break on state taxes.
