Question Worth taking delivery in Germany??

Today I went down to HBL Porsche near Tysons Corner, VA and placed an order for a 2.7, Ruby Red w/ Sand, Bi-Xenons, Bose, PCM, heated seats, mats, colored crests on 17" wheels. Just enough technology to make it interesting, otherwise keeping it pure with the 5-speed, distinctive engine note and great ride and handling on the basic tire/wheel combo. I can modify the order up to the beginning of September if I decide to go crazy with options but I like my basic setup.

Wife liked the basic demo model (her first time in a Cayman), we bashed around the back roads near Wolf Trap and she was hooked. Got about 8% off MSRP.

NOW MY QUESTION: Mfr date is mid-late September. I am very tempted to do German delivery, may be Oktoberfest time in Munich around then! Has anyone done German delivery? Is it like the BMW experience (which I understand from my friend is the gold standard, with the museum pick-up area, etc)? I have frequent flyer miles I need to use or lose.

Super Moderator Gator Bite did tourist delivery and told a great story...Here's some links:

Tourist Delivery

Day 1 - Tourist Delivery

Day 3 - Tourist Delivery

Day 11 - Tourist Delivery - Nurburgring

Day 12 - Tourist Delivery - The End

He used this experience to compile an exhaustive FAQ on the subject:

The Cayman Club - FAQ: Miscellaneous

And another member has also recounted his experience:

From Dream to Reality – The Story of My Tourist Delivery (European Delivery) Cayman S

Happy reading... I doubt you'll have any questions about the process if you read all this.

Thanks for the great links. More information than I could have imagined. Sounds like a very memorable experience. My autobahn experience a couple years ago was a diesel Hertz rental, albeit a BMW 3-series. I've enjoyed Munich many a time but have not ventured far outside it. That said, the price and deposit and then the long wait for vehicle return may not be worth it to me. My countdown to October is already started.

I also noted GatorBite's analog speedometer was set up for km/h - I suppose they have to replace it with the English units speedometer.

The analog speedo (the big dial on the left) is in English units for the cars exported to the US.. the digital speedo can be changed from km/hr to m/hr (and back, if you like) easily with the same button that you use to change the time on the clock...

With Euro Delivery, your car will be a USA spec car; the analog speedo will be MPH. The digital speed readout is easily set to either MPH or KPH. The KPH is really usefull and you can reset it to MPH when your car gets to your dealer.
Factory delivery is excellent and highly recommended if you have never experienced Germany outside major cities or toured along the Rhine. The $2,200 (?) hit and the double wait (for your trip and then for return of the car) are negatives. With the "miles" you need to use up, I'd say "why not". If the new museum is not ready that's also a negative. The "museum" they show you is temporary and minimal. On the other hand the view of the new museum construction site from the dining room (excellent food and wine) where they serve you lunch is memorable.

if you have the time to perform a Euro delivery, why not? It's TIME not MONEY which is the greatest luxury.

BTW if you were planning on the Munich 'Octoberfest' it runs September 22 to October 7 2008. Not much of October really and some years no October to shout about at all!

Euro delivery results in many amazing memories...every time you jump in your car you'll have flashbacks of the fun you had. I had the good fortune to make many euro delivery trips as a teenager, even learned to drive in the Bavarian alps...all amazing memories. But I haven't had the time to do it for decades....planning to do it again next year. Do it! You won't regret it!
