I'm looking to buy a brand new '08 Cayman S. The salesman at Paul Miller in Parsippany, NJ told me yesterday that he cannot order the car with the options I want because Porsche is no longer manufacturing 2008 Caymans other than two special models that they are re-tooling the factory for. He also told me that I will have to wait until at least April if I want to order a car to my specifications, and he doesn't even know if it will be a 2009 or 2010 model. I find it hard to believe that Porsche has stopped manufacturing base Cayman S models for 8 months.
OK, so I am a gal, and I was wearing high heels soooooo....was he just trying to fool this lady to take a car from a nearby dealer? What have you heard?
He is right, the Cayman is getting redesigned (slightly) and is being released Spring of next year. So they are stopping production on al except the special edition cars, which are only being produced to get rid of excess inventory.
If I were you, wait until the Spring to get the latest and greatest, but what you decide is entirely up to you!
Sharon
I was initially working with Flemington Porsche, they were not help full at all. I think the main reason why they were not helpful was because they did not have any CS on their lot. Just checked Paul Miller’s inventory and they don’t have any CSs either. If you are looking for something really specific then you may have to wait till spring 09, but if you are flexible in few things you may get what you are looking for with maybe even more options.
I originally wanted 3 options, but end up with maybe 10 options for just maybe 2-3k more.
Just got my CS in late June so if you need any help let me know. I still have few contacts.
It's quite possible to find an '08 fairly well-equipped on a dealer lot for a good discount if you are willing to spend the time to search for them. I guess it depends on what you're looking for though. If money is not your main concern, I would agree with Boobernackle, and just say to wait to build a new model to your specifications.
In July I did order a new model which is supposed to be manufactured in September. It will be a 2.7 Cayman. The answer that I have heard from 2 dealers (one here in VA and one outside Chicago) I visited is that each dealer is getting less than a handful of production slots (i.e., 1 to 2 slots) for new Caymans and CS's (which will still be considered 2008's) and they are stopping manufacture in December to tool up for the 2010 model. The dealer in Illinois said there will not be a "2009" model Cayman.
You may want to try a different dealer (perhaps not in your immediate vicinity), and check their inventory online. Best approach is to go to Official Porsche Website and select "Find Dealer". The larger a distance radius you select, the more dealers show up.

Actually I was told I wasn't able to build an '08 earlier this month/late July from Park Place in Dallas. Another dealer confirmed your comment about "no '09" because I suggested to them I may wait for the '10 coming in Feb with "all the upgrades" and he agreed.
In regards to checking the official Porsche website; I checked all dealerships on the continental 48 to find what I was looking for. It took forever...but I found one!
Sharon - same situation engnr1. Dealer here in Cincinnati had allocation of base Cayman with Sept build...was able to change color, options, etc. Supposed to be delivered in mid to late Oct. You should check with other dealers and see if they have allocation spots available. I would suspect the dealer would have to change specs soon if they are going to be accepted for Sept build. One interesting note...I initially tried to order as forest green with sand beige leather interior and it was rejected. However, more standard colors were Ok...black, meteor gray, etc.

Well, it is common for them to stop making the current model year cars in May or June. I ran into this problem when my June 07 build slot for my July 07 European Delivery was cancelled. They had ended 2007 builds in May and started making 2008s in July.
Good advice here:

Build slots for the US market have been reduced by over 30% because of our economic conditions and weak dollar. Add the fact that a new model is coming, and they are likely to reduce the builds even more. It is very possible that the dealer you visited has already committed their small allocation of available build slots from now until December, which would put you out to April. But if you take the advice above you are likely to find a dealership that still has an open build slot.
When looking at the wed dealer locator, pay particularly close attention to dealerships that have been awarded 'Premier Dealer' status. They receive more build slots and have more pull. There are only 25 Premier Dealers in the country, so you may not be close to one.
I understand you are thinking about ordering a car, and I do not know if you are considering any 08 CS's that are in stock? I recently got a good deal on a demo at Boardwalk in Plano (16K off sticker w/6k miles and good options, 19 sport wheels, bi-zenons, BOSE, Sport Chrono w/out PSM). They currently have 18 08 CS on the lot. I do not work for them, but I think that is a pretty good deal. Just a thought.
Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
PSM - Porsche Stability Management
While it can’t overcome the laws of physics, the revolutionary Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system does lend an added degree of balance and control to the Cayman’s mid-engine driving dynamics, inspiring surefooted confidence in corners and extreme situations.
A standard feature on the Cayman and Cayman S, PSM continuously monitors steering input, road speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration to calculate the actual direction of travel. If the car begins to steer off line, PSM instantly intervenes with precision brake inputs on individual wheels to help bring the car back onto the driver’s intended path.
If braking alone isn’t enough to correct the vehicle’s cornering line, PSM then calls on the Cayman’s engine management system, adjusting engine output as needed to help stabilize handling. PSM can also compensate in an instant for mid-corner changes in load resulting from deceleration or braking. When Sport mode is selected with the optional Sport Chrono Package, PSM’s threshold for intervention is raised, allowing for greater driver involvement. If you prefer driving without automatic PSM assistance, the system can be set to standby at any time. In this case, it will only intervene under heavy braking, where both front wheels exceed the ABS threshold.
For all of its technical ability, PSM goes virtually unnoticed in everyday driving situations, preserving the Cayman’s natural agility.
Not sure if leasing is an option, but I found this leasing company that delivers all over the country. I wont post payments or anything but if you want check out their site, you can even build your own car there. hope this helps.........cheers
From some of the other threads on this site - general answer is "no", unless the Cayman S Sport edition for some reason is classified a 2009. They are building the 2008 model through December but no farther, and in limited quantities (for the US anyway). The new Caymans that will be manufactured after January will be the revised model with styling, engine, tranny and electronics changes, and so far has been classified as a 2010 model.
