I'm taking the car to a local show this weekend, complete with 'for sale' sign in the window.
Would that be the PCA Concours at Stoney Point Airport? I was hoping to be there to spectate...

I fail to understand the point of a reserve. If there's a minimum amount you'd be willing to accept, then just start the auction at that price. I see nothing to gain by keeping your minimum secret. They'll see your price and either buy it or make offers.

The point of a reserve for Ebay items is to allow lots of lowball bids. With many bids, your item will get hot listed and you 'may' get more than you expected. Having no reserve and posting a minimum (your starting price) ensures that you wil not likely get theh frenzy ...
And it does sometimes work.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
You missed the drive last Saturday from Carlson Porsche in Redwood City to Carmel. It was a blast.
I was hoping to see you there. There were about 100 Porsches and but 2 Caymans.
I posted it here as Sharkwerks Drive. There are a few photos ...

p-nut; reserves are the least amount you'll take in a sale.
in an auction, there's no telling where things will end up.
case in point is this years B/J auction in Scottsdale; a small group of guys from Canada bring in a behemoth GM 'Futureliner'. they know what it cost them to acquire, freshen up, and transport. they are hoping for $400K USD. had B/J been a reserve auction, that's the number they would have most likely used.
instead, they get $4.2 M I L L I O N

there's also this other, small thing- if it's a 'no reserve' auction, sometimes referred to as an 'absolute auction', it GOES FOR WHATEVER IT BRINGS.
in other words, if there's only one bid at $500.00 on a NO RESERVE auction (in this case, let's say it's your car on the block), then it GETS SOLD FOR A LOUSY $500.00. ----better your car than mine.
of course, an 1986 Carrera would be going for at LEAST $20K these days.

Here's another free tip for ya', p-nut; the AC return is under the passenger floor board in your car. If you put some stand-offs between it (the wooden floor board) and the 'firewall' (metal part where the return is), you'll increase the efficiency of your AC system by -at least- three fold. Make sure the carpet doesn't further block the opening, and that some cable guy (stereo person) hasn't used it as a run to the trunk area for audio gear (which would reduce the SCRM of air going through the return.
If you haven't converted to a Sanden/Sankyo compressor w/R-134, or if the system is non-functional, then you might consider doing both at a good AC mechanics shop.
Good luck.

I know what a reserve is - I have hundreds of ebay transactions under my belt, including5 motorcycles and 4 cars. Never once have I used a reserve.
In the examples you gave, the reserve would have made no difference. In the $4.2M example, the car would have exceeded the $400k reserve and the bidding would have kept going. Nothing stops when the reserve is met.
In the second example, the car would not have sold for $500 because that's not where the bidding would start. YOU decide what the opening bid is. If you won't take less than $60k for your car, then that is where you start the bidding. It does you no good to start the bidding at $1 or $500 because none of the bids matter in the slightest until someone bids $60k -- and if they were willing to bid that much, they can do it up front and save everyone that isn't willing to pay $60k a lot of time. The reserve only sets the MINIMUM that an item can be sold for. It does not limit the top bid in any way.
My AC needed new hoses so I ripped the whole system out of the car. It's much easier to work on the engine without all that **** in there, plus it saved about 60 lbs. of dead weight.
I am so sorry to hear you have to let your Cayman go, I know how you love this car, Hope you continue to keep us entertained and informed with your unique style of writing!
