So, if anyone is interested, the dealer is in Spokane, Washington (Liberty lake franchise) and is willing to discount his 06's fairly well. Without my countering his proposal the sales manager offered to discount an 06, seal grey with Zenons, sport chrono, perferred package and bose to $60,000 (MSRP is $65,270 including destination). I was thinking of offering $58K but decided not to. I'm certain he would have taken it though.
Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
Sounds like you are wasting a salesperson's valuable time to me. Why work numbers on a car just to say no thanks.
You may be interested to know that that a salesperson will only get paid if he sells a car. I can safely assume that he worked hard to answer you'r questions and gave you any needed information. Obviously not everyone that comes into a dealership is going to buy a car, but from what you have stated it sounds like you never intended to buy one (no counter offer or explaination on why you said no). I only hope I am wrong here, and that you are serious about buying a car before spending all that time with the sales person.

I don't agree with the statement above. It may take all of five minutes to quote an offer price and most buyers aren't going to jump on a car right away, especially one in this price category. I suppose if I was the sales person I'd love to sell these cars with even a two hour conversation. The fact of the matter is, as a buyer, you don't have any idea what you can get the car for unless you dicker back and forth and are VERY patient. The 'game' is set up that way and if you, the buyer, don't care how much you are paying, then fine, pay what the dealer offers initially.

Kinda quick to bust the guy's chops aren't you? I mean, he stated he was ready to counter the offer but decided afterward not to. People change their mind sometimes. It sounds to me like he was shopping legitimately.
I think you're being a little harsh, especially considing its not your money. Would you rather the guy spend a lot of money getting something he wasn't sure he wanted just so the sales guy made money. If it was my money and for the amount of money we're talking for a Cayman I'd want to be pretty sure about what I'm about to do and it sounds like he wasn't sure about the car and the deal. I'd say someone who doesn't have the money for a Cayman, never has any intention of bying a car,and spends all afternoon with a sales guy is guilty of waisting the guys time, not someone who just wasn't sure. Its part of the business for sales people and if they're half way decent and sell a half way decent product, they're doing just fine.

I think I come down somewhere in between here. I see Cayman Club Sport's view on this if mike_747 wasn't legitimately shopping, but we don't know that yet because Mike hasn't responded here as to why he didn't buy the car or why he didn't counter offer. Cayman Club Sport did also say that he hoped he was wrong in his interpretation which means he thinks he could be but doesn't have enough info to go on here. If I recall correctly, and I always do, Cayman Club sport happens to owe me a phone call, so I'll try not to beat him up until I hear why he hasn't yet called me back. I do this sort of thing with Ferrari dealers all the time. I should spend more time posting here all the 360 Modena and F430 deals I pass on in case anyone is interested.........
Hi again. to answer some questions. First I have no sympathy for a sales man that answers a couple of e-mails - this is hardly 'working hard' to get my business.
As for why I passed - I couldn't get comfortable in the car. The car I test drove had power seats and no matter how I adjusted the lower seat cushion and the back, the steering wheel seemed both too close to me and too high. I've owned a 308 before and the bulkhead forward of the engine allowed an additional 3-4 inches of clearance (behind the seats) to store the top in, so this is what my mid-engined experience has been. I'm not that tall (5'9') so I should have been able to adjust. Also, even though the steering wheel is adjustable for tilt, I felt the range was too limited at ~1.5 inches. I would have liked the wheel to be lower. I also found it a little odd that the right arm rest is on top of the emergency brake handle. I know this is a sports car - but for this kind of money, is an arm rest too much to ask for?
Maybe with repeat visits to the Bellevue dealer (not the one in Spokane) Icould have found my 'comfort zone', but frankly they are not that customer friendly. Very aloof, and elitest with an policy of 'pay MSRP' or go away.
Anyway - to sum up - my issuses may seem like minor nit-pics - but from my point of view - This would be a huge sum of money for a second car (weekend toy) and I felt I should have no reservations. As I told the dealer - I may be more inclined to buy a certified car in a couple of years for ~$45K. If they are not that cheap by then, that's ok.
