I went back through all of the Porsche press releases for Cayman Sales in the U.S. since launch and decided to have a place where I can help us keep track of how the Cayman is doing. We've just seen that 911 and Cayenne sales are down 20+% from last year and continue to slide while Cayman sales, at least for now, continue to hold steady.

*** Please Note that Porsche's figures for Cayman S and Cayman S Design Edition Sales are incorrect in the Porsche sales reports. At some point 80 Cayman S cars were reported sold as Cayman Design Edition cars because as of July 2008 Porsche was reporting sales of 169 Cayman Design Edition cars but in fact has reported only 89 of those sold as tracked on a monthly basis (which can be verified in our tracking numbers above). We show 1632 Cayman S models being sold, but Porsche has reported only 1552 (80 less) as of July 2008. It is possible that in January and/or February 2008 the Cayman Design Edition sales were lumped in with the Cayman S sales and then later broken out on a total basis but Porsche did not go back and correct the individual reporting for those months. ****
Updating stats....
October 06 seems to be an improvement in overall Cayman sales that had bumped up in July with the release of the base Cayman and then started to taper off a little. If you throw out January as an anomaly of pent up demand and just average the next 9 months the Cayman is selling 547 units per month on average through October 06. Total sales through October are 5,950 in the US alone, well ahead of projections.
THE CAYMAN S REMAINS PORSCHE'S #1 SELLING INDIVIDUAL MODEL !!! <-- From 2006 and into early 2007.

I think it's undeniable that the Cayman is selling very well, and I suspect it will continue to do so. However, this last October and October of 2005 are not really comparable months because the Cayman was not available in the US in 2005. We all know that the good old US of A accounts for almost 1/2 of Porsche's global consumption. That in mind, one might expect an huge increase in Cayman sales from October to October.
But I guess it's not that simple. During October of 2005 I'm sure the other markets were seeing the sales frenzy that we saw here in January 06, which will be impossible to duplicate and hard to comp against.
There are a lot of variables to consider, but in time I personally think that the Cayman will find it's place in automotive history as one of the greatest classic Porsches ever. If the car matures and grows the way I think it might, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 911s abandon their rear engine layout and shift to a mid engine design. The 911 will never die, but it may be forced to evolve.
Okay, I'm going to ask again. I got a near invoice deal on a leftover '06 S Cayman S and from anecdotes here many others have too. Is this a normal year end Porsche thing? or a one-time anomaly due to over-guessed inventory? Most acquaintances of mine are surprised to hear this, they generally believe Porsches sell at or near MSRP.
I think 'near invoice' is very uncommon, but at the same time every dearlship I've talked to offered to discount even new cars, so I think full sticker is also rare.

In terms of recent years, since the bubble burst in 2000, it's not an anomaly to get a significant discount - at least in our market. If you're wondering if you got a "good" deal, yes, compared to the vast majority of folks you did (have to remember that most folks on these car boards are not your "average" new porsche customer). Is it the absolute best deal I know of? No, it's not. But more importantly, keep letting your aquaintances buy near MSRP, they give the dealer the ability to sell to you "near invoice"
I have to say, at the very least, this is quite a car, and I am very happy with my decision to get one and thank Porsche for delivering one exceptionally well built car

I agree that the 911 will never die. I can think of no current production vehicle that has evolved as the 911 has. So it is only normal for the 911 to continue improving and adopting the mid engine concept fairly soon. With the new 4 door vehicle being released in a couple of years, I can see the evolution taking place already. Let's see... evolve into two seater, move engine behind driver's seat and hold on
Haven't looked at dealer inventories lately but did today. At least in Texas, pretty much all '06's are gone, there was probably a 100 back in September when I was shopping.
