Is there such a thing as a ride height adjustment as part of an alignment on 987 (specifically 2005 Boxster). I'd called my dealer about scheduling a visit to check front. The driver side is about 0.5" to 1" lower to the ground than the right side. It seems to vary in that range after driving and coming back to the garage (level floor). Service advisor said that it would need an alignment; $300.
Does this seem right? I do have PASM, but it didn't come up in the discussion. Someone else suggested it may be programmable via PIWIS (or what ever the new diagnostic system is called).
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

PIWIS - Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System
Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System (diagnostic tester) This device is used to test various aspects of your Cayman's computer and electronic systems. These units cost over $12,000 to purchase and are connected to Porsche via a wireless connection at the dealership so that your Cayman's information can be sent to Porsche whenever your car is attached for diagnosis. The PIWIS device has the ability to control almost any system in your car provided that your car has the appropriate control units and programming installed. Your dealership may not perform some activities such as disabling safety equipment.
Did you actually measure to come up with .5" - 1" difference, or just eyeball it? Eyeballing "measures" seem to over-estimate the difference. Secondly, are you sure the difference varies; - sometimes being about .5" and sometimes about 1". Caymans don't have height-adjusting collars as some Porsches do, so side-to-side measures should be very close. Mine are within 1/16", both front and back. I don't know much about '05 Boxsters, but if yours has height-adjusting collars on each spring, the corners could be adjusted to yield as much as the difference you mentioned.
Yes, the difference is measured from ground to the fenders. It seems to vary after being driven. The first time I measured it after noticing it visually it was a 1" difference in the front from left to right. The next time I measured it, it was 0.5" difference which I thought was odd it would vary so much. I did measure on level ground (garage).
So there are height adjusting collars on 987s? Or could it be a PASM feature?

Maybe the '05 Boxster doesn't have height-adjusting collars on the Boxster either. The 911s had a metal ring (collar) at each spring. When turned, they raised or lowered the corner for corner balancing. When we got the car about as well balanced as we could, the fender lips would usually be at different heights side to side. Mine were usually about .5" different, but I've seen some with greater differences.
My guess is that you should look further into that much side-to-side difference.
