I was thinking about the DE this weekend - and remembered that one of the Cayman owners filled up his car with race gas - leaded race gas.



No - it wasn't me.

His strategy was to burn it out quickly and then get some good gas in it. Should he have pumped his Cayman's stomach? Use the chemical engineer's adage (dilution is the solution to pollution - blend in good gas)?

What are the realistic consequences? O2 sensor problems? Catalytic converter problems? I snooped - EPA limits lead to 0.1 grams per gallon. How much havoc could 1.2 grams of lead do to a Cayman?

Just curious.

I believe the biggest threat is to the converters, for which lead is a 'poison' (blocks the active sites). One would think that an ECL would light up though if it was bad enough.... If no code, then he might have been lucky. As far as the engine is concerned, others may have more input on that as to effect but I believe that is minimal.

Yup. Kiss those converters goodbye. When I was in Germany for Tourist Delivery, they made me aware that I needed to look out for leaded fuel. They told me that my car would be tested upon return and if there was any evidence of leaded fuel use, the car could not be exported to the United States unitl the converters were replaced, at my cost.

Don't put leaded fuel in your car.

It will damage cats.

If used over an extended period of time it will damage 02 sensors, but very unlikely after just one tank.

One tank shouldn't damage the cats too bad either. I have had to run leaded fuel in my truck before and there have been no problems on power output or emissions.
