Question Oil Capacity

I just had my oil and filter changed at the dealer. $159 bucks. OK, not cheap but it is a lot of oil plus filter plus labor. My mechanic Bobby, who is very knowledgeable, put 9 quarts of Mobile One 0W40. The manual calls for 2.05 gallons or 7.75 liters. The conversion factor is 1.0566882 for liters to quarts. That equals 8.19 quarts. He said the manual is wrong. Any ideas? I trust him. I just want to double check.

I just changed my oil about a week ago myself and it took exactly what the manual calls for. I did place the filter in the filter housing then fill it up with oil before installing.

If its overfilled you may notice soon after you drive it but you probably wont be happy.

Anybody had theirs overfilled? What happened?

To get my to the full mark on the gauge It took 8.75 quarts of Mobil 1 with a filter change, 8.25 brought it 2 bars below the full mark which is 1 bar down from the top.

Thanks for the reply. How much oil did the housing hold?

What does you Oil Level Display show - is it over-full?

When I changed mine w/filter I used 8 qts, and the display ended up at the first mark below full.

Maybe he meant that he had to charge for 9 qts in order to get the extra .2 quart over 8?

You are right however, the manual says 2.05 gal (7.75 liters) with oil filter change (1.98 gal/7.5 liters without filter change).

The small bar at the very top is solid. The side marks indicate that the small bar at the top indicates over full. Do you think a quarter of a quart will cause any problems? Did the 8.75 quarts just read on the 3 bigger bars? Bobby said he puts at least 9 quarts in all of them.

Then he's not as good as he thinks he is. The manual is correct.

1st time I did it myself and had ½ Litre left from 8 Litres purchased.

Second time I supplied the dealer with 8 Litres. (2 year service) The dealer used all 8 and it came back overfull,

I had to drop ½ Litre from the sump.

Next time I’ll do it myself !!

I had been wondering if my dealer did my oil change correctly. My indicator reads 1 bar over full (which is all there is), cold or hot doesn't matter.

I'm not worried if its .25 qt over because it is a dry sump of sorts. But knowing them they fired the car up, ran it for prolly no more than a couple min, and proceeded to drain the oil. I've read that it could take quite a while for the old oil to fully drain. It's all dependent upon the draining of old oil as to exactly how much to replace it with. I kinda miss not having an good old reliable dipstick.

My question is how do we tell how over full it is if all the indicator bars are used up??

Thanks
Phillip

There are marks to the right of the bars. Max and Min indicators. If the top small bar is solid. It is over filled. You will see 5 bars total. 2 small and 3 bigger.

I doubt that a .25 qt. overfill will do any damage, although I want about .5 qt. down from full for tracking. It may be difficult to know in the shop exactly when "precisely full" is reached, even while looking at the oil level gauge. I usually ask for just 8 quarts and check the oil level the next morning after the drive home. So I usually do the fine adjustments myself.

I recently had a dealer oil change for the first time and specifically asked the tech not to over-fill. He promised that he would not over-fill. I was charged for 9 quarts, and the next morning the oil level showed at the full (not over-full) mark.

Yes I agree mine is over full, there is an indicator that says full and over full. But how over full is it? A couple ounces? Or a couple quarts? Both cases would read over full as well.

We once had a Mercedes in for an oil change and we brought 3 gallons for them to use. Well they used all 3 and it only holds 10qts, so it was 2 qts over full. I didn't discover that until we were 10 min away and the oil light came on and indicated over fill. In that case it was 2 qts over full.

2 quarts over full and I'm worried. 2 Ounces not so much.

Each bar is a half quart, right? So are you saying that you want your car to be down one bar for the track?

Why? To avoid oil smoke belching? Our cars are already at the edge of potential oil starvation during sustained mega-G turns if we run rubber that is too sticky.

What gives, JM?

I only have 1 track day on my 3.4 and my 2.7 never belched, so I planned to keep the oil topped off.
