20,000 mile service

I'm approaching the 20,000 mile service mark. I'm wondering what goes into this service. Do they run a diagnostic, and is there a charge for this diagnostic test?

Besides an oil change, what else do they do during this maintainance. Also, about how much should I expect it to cost? Thanks a lot.

I was quoted @ $600 in Texas, so I did the oil change, brake flush, cabin + air filter replacement myself.

The cost to reset the service light was 0.5 hr labor

I've called everywhere to find out a cost for this service and have gotten estimates from local dealers anywhere from $900.00 to $500.00. You can guess which one I went for.

I have just passed 20k. I am out sequence on oil changes, having changed it at 5k and 15k. I am also over 550 mi. and 8 hours driving (roundtrip) from the nearest dealer. The service calls for replacing the pollen filter. While the air cleaner filter is not due until 40k, since I live in a dusty part of the world I ordered both from Suncoast for about $65. I also have The Durametric software and cable ($250).

After reading the maintenance schedule, aside from visual inspection of brake lines and pads, hoses, lights, horn etc., it is check for error codes and replace the pollen filter. This past weekend, armed with instructions from this site I changed filters, checked for error codes (none) and cleared the service reminder with Durometric.

While I will use the dealer for warranty work an major repairs, it is impractical for minor servicing that can be done at home. The expensive part was the Durametric, but I will have that for the life of the car.

Tell me more about the Durametric software. Awhile back there was talk on here about VAGCOM which is well-known aftermarket software available for VW-Audi. With it you can do pretty much anything a dealer could do. I your software similar in functionality?

For the 20k-mile/2-year CS service my dealer charged 2.5 hours labor ($262.50), plus parts. Parts were more expensive than one might find elsewhere, although PCA members get 20% discount on parts: $49 for air filter; $28 for oil filter; $6.80 per quart for oil ; and cabin-air filter $100. Parts total was $191 with the PCA discount, so labor plus parts totaled about $454.

Check your service booklet for details, but written on my service invoice were lube of doors, latches, and hinges, cleaning/conditioning weather seals, checking/adjusting tire pressures, checking/filling washer reservoir, checking operation of a number of items, clearing road debris from front of radiators, deoderizing evaporator case, and completing system set-up for fault memory and coding next service interval. They also replaced the rear hatch bumpers under Recall W614, and gave me a copy of the DME readout.

I usually get the CS serviced and inspected for track events at an independent shop, but plan to take it to the dealer every two years.

The Durametric Software allows you to read and clear codes, check for over-revs, clear the airbag light and reset your service reminder. It also allows for real-time data logging and has what are called Drive Links to activate/deactivate certain engine functions for advanced tuning/diagnostics. From what I have read about VAGCOM, it has certain functions that Durametric does not have (yet?) that are currently only available thru PIWIS (e.g. reprogramming comfort/keyfob functions, disabling seat belt alarm, etc).

I had a coupon for a $300 discount. They changed the oil, filter, cabin air filter, and brake fluid, plus the routine inspection stuff. No leaks, clean bill of health - cost me about $200 out-of-pocket

Ignorant question: Is 20K the first service for the car? I've owned my CS for about 1.5 yrs and haven't serviced it yet nor can I remember what they told me about when the first service is.
