Question Engine pinging.

My 2.7 Cayman appears to ping momentarilly when I get on the gas agressively with the transmission in neutral. Usually heard when downshifting and rev matching. I also get it in gears - someties when I go from off throttle to throttle application. It sounds just like very pronounced detonation, but lasts less than a second. The car has always done it, fuel type makes no difference.

Has this been discussed here under a different term? Ticking? Clunking? Are you also experiencing this sound?

I get a knocking @2500-2800 rpm occasionally under full throttle. I have a Softronic flash. More noticeable when the flash was first installed. I don't think it is too serious because now I don't floor it until over 3000rpm.

I started a thread on this here...

pinging/detonation?

Happy to continue the merged discussion here. I have a sneaking suspicion there is nothing wrong with my car. It's a "feature", if you will. I mostly notice it in throttle on after throttle off application in gear. It's very brief and very similar to the sound just at the time of or before a stall.

I have Durametric

No codes there. I will learn to recreate this, and maybe even record it for you all.

Re: I have Durametric

I have found a solution to my _extremely rare_ click issue. My symptoms were off throttle, then back on moderately at 2500ish rpm. One light click is heard then it goes away and usual pick up. It started around 11k miles. Tried many different premium gas brands and stations, techron additive, talking to dealer (who didn't see a problem and advised me to drive harder). etc etc.. To no avail.

Well, I picked up some shell v-power fuel additive from autozone (and there was a rebate on them as well). Lo and behold, the click/ping is gone.

Be careful with that stuff. You may be masking a problem.
