Question Unexpected Service Interval

My less than 1 year 07 CS has 11K miles. I am getting an instrument panel message saying "Service in 1000 miles". Service advisor says the car has a 'real smart' oil sensor and it must be right. This sounds hokey to me. Anyone explain? When buying car I was tols 15K miles for first service, Porsche Spec sheet says 20K miles/2 years for service.:confused

You're not the only one with this issue:

6000 miles? And a checkup?

As you know 06/07 Caymans have a service interval or 2 years or 20K miles which ever comes first (per the manual). I suspect you are about 2 years from your build date hence the reminder you are getting.

08s have a 12K miles schedule - maybe you have an "upgraded" reminder module. Since 12k is now official service interval (on practically identical cars) you may just do it...

Is the 12 K service on the 08s the same service as the 20K on the 06s? If so, is there any clue as to what prompted the change?

I think the service advisor you spoke to you is just trying to get you in for service. It sounds like the dealer you purchased the car from set the service interval reminder for 1 year 12K miles. If Porsche put in a smart sensor don't you think they would put it in the manual and recommend servive when the cumputer says instead of 2 years or 20K miles. If they did both that would cause a lot of confusion with its customers.

Correct Answer

AN Approx. 10% ethanol increase has been added to our fuel which causes internal engine changes (don't want to get too technical). The motor is the exact same so I don't think the service advisor is trying to take your money. All the 05 and newer cars should be serviced once a year or 12k miles. You should all follow the service interval now. PCNA has tested the fuel and this info is correct

porschepaul---oh go ahead, be more technical, or at least make sense. Did pcna test fuel system components and find new fuel to be a problem?...or just confirm increased alcohol content? If the fuel is really damaging, then ALL cars need hoses, etc replaced. Need more knowlegable evidence that ethanol is the reason for reduced service interval.

ouch

Call your local dealer and have them contact the local TFM. haha. Thats funny that you would reply like that. I'm here in ontario at the Porsche Academy and we all just read your post. That IS the reason for the interval change. I don't think you read my post correctly. I said changes not DAMAGES

If changes in gas has made Porsche change the recommended service interval for '06 and '07 models from 2 years/20K miles to 1 year/12K miles don't you think Porsche should send a letter to all '06 and '07 owners informing them of the change. If it was critical for the service interval to be changed and Porsche didn't properly inform owners it could lead to legal issues with any out of warranty repairs needed in the future. Personally, I'm sticking to the recommended service intervals listed in the owner’s manual. If the car had a sensor it wouldn't recommend service at an exact day and mileage in the future. My service reminder has been counting down for 30 days to exactly 12K miles. That seems like it was programmed in. I also got a service reminder card from the dealer I purchased the car from when they expected me to have 12K miles on the car based on my allowed miles per year on my lease. It all seems fishy.

I also had the same message at 11,000km. Build date for my car is July 2007.

My Cayman is telling me service is due at 11K km

This is after I changed the oil at 1500km.

I went to the dealer and he told me that it'd be OK if I extend it to 15,000km. And he deleted the message using his OBD2 reader/writer.

I suspect that this is a default Siemens VDO instrument cluster message which Porsche neglected to delete.

I also get a service message last month which is about 13 months after the vehicle built date. I only have 6000 miles on the car so I just asked the dealer to reset the message. One thing to note is that I have taken the car to the track 5 times over the past 12 months.

info

If you have not received a letter from Porsche then you "should" stick to your recommended interval. Unless a couple hundred bucks for service doesn't bother you. Writing letters or sending notifications is what leads to legal issues. I thought we were a club discussing issues and chating about what I thought was cool info. Look at the big picture....The engine has not changed at all but the service interval has, and its only dropped 8k miles and 12 months. To those who are going to continue the 20k/24 months....Your saying if a service action or campaign comes up you will tell the dealer/shop that you are not interested? Of course you won't. Only from 05-07 for Porsche sport cars did they Publish 24 months for service (not counting s.u.v.) Those 2 years. As long you followed the recommended service interval you could qualify for some Goodwill assistance if anything happens after the warranty period. We are not going stress over 2 years of production. Changing the engine oil is one of the best things your motor anyway. There will not be anything in writing about this other than a club member who discussed this issue with fellow PCNA friends and shared it online here.
