Hmm, Clutch Smell

Anyone enjoyed the "clutch smell" when you were not being hard on the car? Just noticed it the other day after pulling in the garage after getting caught in the rain. The car only has about 11200miles on it. I did read some of the other comments regarding this and they refered to cosmoline(spelling?).What is that?

Any comments on this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Wes

The smell is most likely Cosmoline. Do a search on Cosmoline and you will find many threads on the subject. It is totally normal and will eventually burn off. Nothing to worry about.

Here is a bit about Cosmoline that can be found in the FAQ:

Likely cosmoline though clutch smell is different. I did have an incident where every once in awhile, shifting from first to second would not happen very smoothly and one in particular caused a huge waft of clutch smell. Dealer tightened up the shift linkage cable and never had a problem since.

Cosmoline (or it's Modern Equivalent) is a Waxy Protective to stop corrosion -and all Porsches are protected this way out of the factory -

Sometimes in close proximity to a heat source, it can melt and burn releasing a 'smell' Odd/Bad/Indifferent. It can drip onto hot components.

It can present at the oddest of times. If it is this, do not worry.......

Razorx,

I think it is clutch smell. I have a lot of clutch left judging by the pedal, so I will keep an eye on it. Thanks for your input!

Wes

Karel,
I know what that cosmoline is now.Thanks. I have seen it on underside of the car on metal components. Not sure if that is my smell or not.

Wes

I would bet cosmoline is what you smell. It will take some time to "burn" off and many other owners have been alarmed by it until it was explained and or went away.
