As much as I hate to admit it, I have never opened the engine compartment.
When I tried the other day, by simply pulling on one of the corner tabs, it didn’t seem to want to lift.
How do I open the engine compartment?

Those tabs you pulled on are not attached to the foam cover in any way. They are there as anchor points for the cargo netting. In order to get the foam cover off, you need a wedge or flat head screwdriver to pry up the foam. It bends with little effort so it's pretty easy to remove. The aluminum cover is removed with a 30 torque driver; 5 screws and it's open. Check the Articles section because there are a couple of articles that give you step by step instructions on how to remove the engine cover.

It's very easy to open, just be a little persistent, the rug + padding/insulation is heavy. If you have the right torx driver (25/27 or 30, I don't remember which I used as I have all), it's a cinch, even for a useless person like me.

I haven't opened mine and am not embarressed. I normally like to open the hood and look at things in my engine compartment, but this isn't something one can do by flipping a hood latch. So I haven't.
