Aircon Woe

Dealer just called to let me know they suspect leakage behind the front bumper. And they need to take off my TechArt kit to fix it. They are scared of breaking my bumper. Has anyone had this problem before? BTW, during my first visit, they did the discharge and refill. That didn't work.

There have been some reports of minor A/C refrigerant leaks, usually in the A/C radiators, which are behind the front bumper - so it's not unheard of. From what I recall, all were fixed with no more problems. I hope they're careful with your kit.

The leak has been identified coming from a hose that runs across the front bumper. The dealer is charging me for the replacement because of my modified TechArt which they claim voids the warranty. Obviously I am very unhappy with that.

All I can say is that I have been totally surprised on how well the Cayman airco works! I had some fears that the motor being so far from the grill might somehow lessen the efficiency, but in hot California valley weather (95+ degF) it holds at 70 deg easily. I hope the incidence of such leaks, whatever is low -- better for the Cayman community as a whole.
Good luck in troubleshooting your system.

Sounds like they don't have much competition to which they worry you'd abscond...

I can see them charging for removing a non-standard bumper but how did the bumper cause the AC leak. Or are they claiming the install caused the problem. I'd sure ask for a detailed explanation.

Regarding the hose - The dealer had to recharge my system two times (including dye) in seven months and still couldn't find the problem. Finally, at the annual service they found the problem - the hose behind the front bumper.

They fixed it in one day and so far, knock on wood, the AC is still working, but it's only been 4 months so we'll see.

As to voiding the warranty, that seems strange to me. Changing the bumper has no impact on the AC system unless they're saying they see damage to the hose that they believe was caused by installation of the TechArt bumper.

Good luck!
