Last week when I was changing over to my track pads, I noticed some gouges in the rear OEM pads (see picture below) which appear to start on the leading edge of the pads. The rotors look fine, as do the front pads.
I'm wondering if the holes in the rear rotors are occasionally picking up small bits of gravel and causing this? Anyone have any other theories?

Yeah looks like you got something in there, do you drive on gravel roads regularly? Road construction near your regular driving route?
WRONG............
Hard Braking on Stock Pads..............
I changed my Stock Pads after the first trackday - and was horrified by the pitting and gouging in them - The Rotors were smooth, but the pads were shot.
I took them into Porsch GB Headquarters - and was told that they were wear items and not warrantied - I frogmarched the 8a$tard$ out to see that my Cayman only had 2,800 miles on the odometer........... How can that be worn out = fair wear and tear.........?
You have not got gravel inside (Ken how can that happen?) just used the Stock Pads in spirited driving.................

When cleaning my wheels I have used my air compressor to blow out debris from the holes in the rotors; gravel included. I think it is entirely possible that the gouges shown in the pictures are a result of rocks and debris becoming lodged in the holes in the rotors and gouging the pads.
I don't drive on Gravel tracks - the grit has to be smaller than the Pits/Gouges and as such could not pass the holes in the rotors - I check my rotors religously and after such few miles they were pristine - what you blow out of your rotor holes are pad debris.......... I do this too.....
The Pits/Gouges are Deep and Irregular.
The OEM Pads are not up to hard braking........... Destroyed in one track day..........
We still have a lot of that coarse road sand they spread during the winter snows on some areas that I drive frequently, so I think that might be what I'm picking up. You would think that it would be more likely to get into the rotors when you're actually driving thru the slush with it mixed in; however, I didn't notice the grooves in the pads last month when I changed them out with my track pads.
I don't think it is from hard braking, because I don't drive my car that hard on the street, and the gouges look like something other than just excessive wear (unless there is some kind of defect in the pads themselves).

I got 8500 miles out of my OEM pads. That included 5 DE track days and a car control clinic. They were cracked and gouged, but mostly around the edges. The fronts wore through to the wear sensors and luckily I had Pagid Oranges to replace them with. Big difference on the track. There were no grooves as you show on your pads.
