Failing lifters

Hey Peeps, has anyone here experienced valve lifter failure? What were the symptoms and was there any associated cam or other drivetrain damage known. Last winter I noticed some lifter noise (believed to only be one) at idle that would go away after about a minute of idling in say 25-50 degree F weather conditions. So, no noise since spring and summer temps have been around until the other day when with the engine fully warmed I experienced some loud tapping under acceleration with misfiring around the 1500-2500 rpm range. At first I thought it may be a rod bearing but I believe it was a lifter as I unfortunately have had experience with a gradual rod failure in a 911 and this was different. The problem has mysteriously dissappeared for the last two days. As a result, I have reflashed my software back to stock in anticipation of an "event " soon which will take me to the dealer, I have 17000 miles on the CS. Has this happened to anyone else? If I have a bad lifter I think it would be appropriate for the dealer to replace all of them... Thanks for your input and advice!

This does sound like a lifter might be on the way out... this happened a couple of years ago to K-Man S... after the usual reading out of the DME for over-revs, etc. they covered it under warranty. I believe they replaced all the lifters on the bank that the failure occurred.

Here's a couple of links...

I had a lifter problem this spring. Never determined what caused it because by the time my service dept. got around to checking it in the shop, the problem had resolved itself, and no fault codes were stored.

PCNA refused to authorize tearing down the engine, since the problem had resolved itself and was not reproducible. They changed my oil (again) thinking it might have been a particle in the oil. I haven't had any recurrence since then.

(I'd give you the link to my original post, but I'm sending this from my phone.)

While you may have a lifter problem, there is mention in the manual about regularly driving the car. Some folks that do not drive regularly have experienced an occasional noisy lifter(s) on startup, though they have quited down after awhile.

I make sure that I drive my car at least weekly. And I haven't had any problems at all.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I drive the car everyday three times a week putting about 70 miles on it each drive to a work related location. I'll sit tight until I'm due for the 20,000 miles service and report it then. Thanks again!
