How to interpret rev test?

Hi Gang,

I've been considering the purchase of an '07 Cayman with 29K miles on it
but the dealer [non Porsche] doesn't have a rev test for the engine. Does
anyone know what the test costs, approximately, and whether or not I should
have other tests performed if I decide to pay to have the car analyzed?

Also, can a "lay" person such as myself read the rev test or does it need a
trained eye?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Everett

You will have to call your local Porsche dealer and inquire about that since rates vary. At the same time you can have them remove the engine cover and inspect for leaks, check that any updates have been done and give you an estimate on remaining rotor, brake and tire life. Be sure and get everything in writing to help with the negotiations and to understand your future expenses. The seller might be willing to deduct the cost from the price if you do purchase the car. I remember a thread that discussed the various rev limiter read outs and if someone doesn't add that here I'll try to find it later.

Edit: Here is one I remember. PIWIS Analysis Log

And see if you can talk to the former owner. Sometimes that can be very useful.

This might be what you're talking about, look it over and see if this is the thread you were referring to;

Time Sensitive Question--Overrev issue

If not, I'll do some more searching too, but later.

Santa Fe & TX-KmanS,

Thanks gentlemen! I read the two threads you alluded to and feel better informed.

As Santa Fe points out, I should call my local Porsche dealer and find out what a
comprehensive analysis of the car would cost. In any case I suspect it would be money well spent,
especially since the dealer of this car is not a Porsche franchise.

Thanks again.

Might not be a bad idea to get a working log from someone with a PIWIS.

Tool Pants,

Thanks for the tip. I'm located in the San Francisco Bay Area, as is the car I'm
thinking about.

I am in San Jose and have been Boxstering for 9 years. I know many dealership and independent mechanics. The independent mechanics use to work at dealerships then started their owns shops.

There are 2 great independent shops, in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, that do pre purchase inspections. Problem is they do not yet have a PIWIS because it is so expensive. They have PST2s but it don't work on 2005 up cars.

If you just want a printout of the working log then I know somone with a PIWIS, but he is in the Sacramento area. He is not a mechanic.

If you can get the car to Rector Porsche in Burlingame or Stevens Creek Porsche in San Jose I will give you the names of the mechanics I have known for years who I would trust to do a pre purchase inspection on a car I was considering buying. Both dealerships have a PIWIS. I think Stevens Creek charges $250 for the inspection. I do not know what Rector charges.

I have only been there once because one of the local Boxster owners lived near Stead and he took me over to meet the service manager, Eric Schaefer. That was about 6 years ago. They had a good reputation back then. Schafer is still the manager. But someone recently gave Stead a negative review.

Board Message

I have no personal experience with Stead and do not know their mechanics. A local 2003Boxster owner just went over there to have his OBC turned on and a few mechanics tried but could not figure out how to do it. We have been turning it on for 4 years. I have a PST2 and I can turn it on, so the local owner is coming over to my office. The local owner even had a printout of the instructions on how to turn it on. Makes me wonder.

Thanks again Tool Pants. I tried to click on the "Board Message" area in your message to read the negative review of Stead, but the link keeps returning an error comment.
