Power steering fluid

Just a quick question. I am not near a Porsche dealer (live in West Texas). I was at the VW dealership picking up some coolant for my daughters Jetta and I went ahead and got some power steering fluid from VW. It is for the new VW's and Audi's. It has some reference to 115 in the fluids that it is compatible with.

Does anyone know if I could use this in my 08 Cayman S? I am considering DE's and autocrosses and am a little freaked out about all the talk regarding power steering failure after just a couple of events.

I guess anyone looking into DE's should do the insulation, underdrive pulley and cooler install?

No, don't do all of that if you're just getting started. I think only 1 tracker has done the cooler, and he tracks constantly in the hot, hot, hot Southern California summer. I would suggest doing the underdrive pulley, and seeing how it goes. The underdrive pulley is pretty easy (if you have a compact reciprocating saw), and it has the bonus of freeing up a little power.

The correct PS fluid is Pentosin CHF 11S. Make sure whatever you bought is compatible with that. I bought a can of the Pentosin CHF 11S at a local auto parts store - it's not uncommon.

Thanks for the advice. I looked closer to the label on the VW fluid and the quote on the label says "DO NOT mix this fluid with any other hydraulic or power steering fluids other than CHF 11S miscible in any proportion" I bet this factory VW/Audi fluid is the same as Porsche uses? I do not need any fluid at this time, just wondering?

It sounds like it IS CHF 11S, but put in a VW bottle. So it should be OK to mix with what's in your car.

Good information to have. We do actually have a BMW dealer. Thanks for the help, I am looking forward to my first AutoX in the CS this weekend and have a DE next month. I want to make sure that the power steering fluid is topped off prior to the DE.

From what I get from a bunch of folks the way to go is to get the underdrive pulley, do some cool down time after hard driving, and try to be smooth on the steering input (you obviously have not seen my driving - I just sold a 87 930, not exactly a great AutoXer).

I got the same stuff from my local VW dealer, part # G004000M2 at $24/L. It does not say Pentosin anywhere. BMW dealer wanted $30 for branded Pentosin. I'll top off with the VW stuff and let everyone know if my pump fries. My first DE

Pentosin CHF 202S, which is identical with Pentosin CHF 11S (according to my Porsche dealer), is also $24/liter from the dealer.
