Rotor maintenance

Do you folks ever clean your brake rotors to ensure there is no excessive brake dust in the drilled holes? I applied some pressurized water and large amount black water came out from the other side. Is it better to leave the rotors alone?

good question. I've all sorts of gunk in my holes, and I'm wondering whether I should just take a toothpick to poke at them. The temptation is crazy.

The holes are for ventilation and faster cooling of the rotor itself. I woudl only assume that keeping them as clear and free as possible would let the design work as it should. The only question in my mind would be HOW to clean them properly and not affect the performance of the rotor (as in not applying any chemicals that might make the surface slick or coat it in any way).

A good tight stream of water from a garden hose into the holes should do it.

A big no no is to blast it with compressed air, you don't want to be breathing any of those particles!

**** The pressure washer at the DIY car wash works just fine for cleaning brakes & the inside of the wheels. A good coat of wax on the inside of the rims is well worth the time. Remember that you will have delayed braking on the first stop due to wet brakes.
