I know the 996 and 997 no longer has dip sticks. Does anyone know if the Cayman has a dip stick? If not, is the Porsche oil level indicator working well?
Root of my question is that BMW did away with the dip stick in the E60 M5s, and the electronic gage is a POS and caused a lot of problems for the owners. I'm trying to find out if the Cayman may post similar issue. Thanks for the education.
Pong
No dipstick in the Cayman. There's an electronic self check for oil level same as on the Boxster. From my Boxster owning friends, it's been bulletproof & far easier than checking oil level on our 993s.

For us anal folks. Any thoughts on a dip stick that could be used to double check the oil level?
Jim
Well, you might be able to tap into the filler tube in the engine compartment somehow, but why? Then, you'd have to remove your engine cover whenever you want to check it.

I think you misspelled "dipstick" .

This all brings up another question I haven't looked up yet... When my CS comes out of storage, it probably needs a bit of oil. What does Porsche use for stock oil weight? Synthetic right off the bat?

The cars come with 0-40W mobil one full synthetic. Check your manual for all the other stock fluids that you may want to inquire about.

The usual recommendation is for Mobil-1 0-40W. However, other synthetics are acceptable; you might check out the following TSB:
