CEL light went off after Porsche "drive cycle" of 100 miles.

Just a heads up for anyone with similar issue, and follow up to a thread I said I would report back on.

After a lengthy time sat in my garage over Winter I recently took her out and the CEL came on. Dealer said that he was 99% certain that it was due to the long period of storage in a cold environment, and said this was quite common with Pcars? He said that the cars have a "drive cycle" of 100 miles when the ECU checks any erroneous issues, and if all is well, resets itself. He told me to go out and drive it hard for 100 miles and see what happens...

Well, I just passed the 100 mile mark from the time CEL went on and the warning light just cleared itself automatically. Looks like the service guy at the dealer actually knew what he was talking about!

Anyone with a CEL that comes on after such circumstances, may want to try driving their car hard for 100 miles and see what happens.

But now the question becomes, has a code been stored? Some states read the codes for emission and if one is stored in there, you fail.

Just a thought.

The codes that can be set are many and some are just a minor fault and some that are major. If I was a dealer I would like to see what the code is. If it is one time fault the light will go out but that does not mean the code is out of the memory. As some of the codes can be of a major issue I would like to know.

Chows,

My CEL in my VW Passat has been coming on and off intermittently for the last 80,000 miles (same error every time - purge valve - which I have already replaced twice).

I was recently scheduled to have my car emmission tested. I waited for the light to go off, like it does from time to time, drove right to the inspection station and passed with flying colors. The light was back on the next day.

Silent Will; Thanks for sharing. Very intersting tid bit of information.

This type of error can be triggered by any leak in that system, not just the purge valve. I don't actually know for a Cayman but this is based on Audi/VW experience. Check hoses, clamps, etc.

I can only relay my experiece. My Check engine light came on. when they checked it , it was a leak between the gas filler and the gas tank. They never explained exactly what it was, but they fixed it. It has not come back so far.
