Wheel Caps With Colored Crest.

Observation and questions about wheel caps with colored crests- I was at an area Porsche dealer and while looking at Porsche wheels, I noticed that the wheel caps with colored crests were not in the same position on adjacent wheels (same side of car). Aren't these wheel caps inserted/snapped into the wheels and can they not be placed in the same position on the wheels so that they look uniform? If the caps are on the wheels prior to placement of the wheel on the axle, couldn't they still be positioned in the same manner? Can the dealer do it prior to taking posession of the car?

Thanks!!

Dooby - do you mean, that if I look at the passenger side of the car, for instance, that both the front and rear wheel emblems are rotated to the same orientation, both upright, for example? If so, there's no way they are going to stay aligned even if you did line them up. Is my original interpretation correct?

The point of the crest - bottom - should point to the valve stem. The center cap is designed to be rotated to accommodate adjustments. Ralph Boothe designed center caps that would always remain vertical. Rolls-Royce uses them now.

You have it correct. Are you saying that the caps do not move as the wheel moves? Why is that? I don't understand. If they start at the same position, why don't they remain in the same position as the car moves? Tire size? I guess, now that I think about it, that would do it.

I don't mean vertical necessarily, but at least in the same position. Do the caps rotate differently than the wheels?

Dooby
No, but each wheel rotates independently of the other so even if they were perfectly lines up, as soon as you made a turn their orientation would no longer match.

FYI, at our big multi-region event (Fiesta del Porsche) the serious concours guys would remove the center caps from the wheel before arrival on site, and only reinstall them when the car was in its final location for judging. Then they would pop them in with the point facing down.

Just one of the many reasons I consider concours guys major whack jobs

I hate it when you guys do this to me while I am drinking coffee! Now I'm cleaning it off my monitor. That was very funny to me.

I am waiting patiently for a concours guy to log in and rip me a new one!

Not to mention that I am an Autocrosser, and think nothing of driving 850 miles one -way to a multiday out of town event, for a grand total of 6 minutes of seat time spread out over two days.

Some may actually conisder such behavior to be a sign or more serious illness than simply being called a "whack job".

So if I told you I do this everytime I park in a public place I'd be a real serious whack job?

I don't know that I can think of a way to describe the depths to which such a person would have fallen!

Then again, I do always park ten miles away from where I am going....much to the chagrin of my wife.

On a positive note, I have not gotten a door ding on either my 911 or CS, and that goes back to November of 2001, so that says something for our various obsessions and compulsions.
