19" vs 18" track setup --help!

Any current info on this subject? I checked threads going back ~1yr.
I just got turbo wheels so I now have 2 sets of 19" (carerraS). I planned to mak them my track wheel, but most trackers use 18" (I think) because of more (and better?) options/compounds. Are there more options for 19" now, and are there reasons because cost for going with 18"? Someone said turnin felt more positive on 19s...any drawback? Thanks for any

I don't think there have been any recent additions to the R-compound tires options in 19" sizes. I think you're correct that one of the major reasons why so many track on 18s is the greater range of R-compound options, and their lower cost. But I ran across a thread on rennlist recently where some argued that 18s are also "better" on track than 19s, at least for the Cayman. Yes, the general understanding is that a shorter sidewall will flex less on turn-in, providing a crisper turn-in, but I don't know what that might mean in terms of lap times. I had posted on that thread that I didn't think tracking on 18s versus 19s would make a noticable difference, but someone who had tried both posted that 18s are better than 19s.

Also 18" wheels and tires weigh less than 19" (usually), and it's unsprung weight (which means you can multiply the total weight difference by 4 to get an idea of the effect of the extra unsprung weight). Depending on which wheels and tires, that difference can be significant.

ditto - lot's of choices from Toyo, Kumho, Michelin, BF-Goodrich.

The difference in sidewall height and stiffness isn't huge. An 18" R-Compound tire has a pretty short, firm sidewall to begin with.

For cost reasons alone, it make sense to stick with 18" wheels.
