Shaking Wheel

I noticed that my steering wheel shakes at about 60-70mph. I thought it would be a wheel balancing issue so I took it to the dealer. They serviced it and balanced all 4 tires. Now it still shakes at this speed... is it because the tires are too thin? I have the stock 19s

i have the same problem with my 19's. but it seems like it only happens or is worse when the tires are cold. once all is heated up it is gone for the most part. after driving the car with both 19 and 18 in. wheels i definitely prefer 18's. i wish i had a set of boxster s wheels and cayman s wheels, but i just loved the carrera sport wheel and got a set.

Did you search for vibration? There are several that have had the same issue. Mine was cured by cleaning the Cosmoline off the wheels and torqueing to the correct specs. I suspect the cosmoline since it had unequal build up of dirt at various spots on the wheel. All is well since.

I think esaam got it right. How often are you driving the car? If it's been sitting in the cold for days, it will take some time to warm up the tires - they'll feel square. The 19's just make the symptom more acute than with 18's. Even here in the Sunshine State, the tires feel a bit rough until they get warmed up - it may take up to 5 miles or so

i rarely drive my car... it always sits for weeks. i guess that will change now since the tax season is over and the weather should warm up a bit...

My 19's will vibrate the steering wheel before the tires warp up. Usually not more than 15 min.

They make these wheel cradles that will help this issue..not sure how to find them - usually see them in old car mags...stops the flat spot issue.

Just park on them and the wheel has no flat surface when the car sits for longer periods of time.

best of luck!

I think Zeitgeist is referring to these: Tire flatspotting

Unequal build up of dirt

I've had to clean the outside of my wheels (with the Porsche kit) twice in the first 1,900 miles (because of brake dust build up). Recently I've noticed steering wheel vibration above 65-70 mph. When I drove in a convoy of Porsches at those speeds earlier this year (to & from a PCA event), I didn't notice any such vibration.

I think I'll try to be more through when cleaning the wheels in the future and see if that helps.

No shaking on my 19's at those speeds, I have 3K miles on them.

It happened to me once or twice when the tires were very cold (19" PS2) and outside temps were also low cruising on the freeway

Nothing since. Everything's fine.

After driving similiarly equipped cars back to back with 18s and 19s, I prefer the 19s (which surprised me). They turn in faster and have a more solid feel. My 19s with PS2s don't vibrate at speed but it's a daily driver.
