I am getting a set of Enkei NT03-M wheels in 18x8.5 (50 offset) and 18x10 (60 offset) as recommended by tirerack for our fitment. These are 3-4 lbs lighter than the factory 18s, so I'm pretty set on that. I would assume that the optimum tire sizes would be 245/40-18 and 275/35-18. One of the guys at my dealer is selling his boxsterS, and is therefore selling his track wheels and tires. He runs 225s and 295s (Pilot Sport Cups) on similiar size wheels. This sounds very imbalanced from what I have learned in my own experience plus what i have heard in this forum. He has 2 complete sets and is selling them at a pretty good price, but i think these sizes would understeer like mad. What do you guys think?
Actually, I was using 225/40 18 front and 285/25 18 rear Pilot Sport Cups for about 7 days of DE, and they were GREAT. I'd snap these up if the price is ok.
Will understeer but more rubber on the road is gonna help you put that power down. Do something else to get rid of the understeer. Adjustable rear sway?
Jeff: I agree with you and Brad for the reason you cite (i.e., excessive push). In fact, my first thought was that that these wheels/tires were actually taken off a 911, where that width stagger (2 3/4") would work better. I also think that the wheel widths and tire sizes you planned would be just about optimum for the CS, and assuming proper offsets, there should be no rubbing.
It turns out that the Pilot Sport Cups do not come in a 245, so Jim@TireRack recommended 235/40-18s and 265/35-18s. My only concern now is that the rear tire circumference is almost an inch less, so that's pushing the 3% difference limit that everyone talks about. I think several people on this website run this combo on the track, so maybe it's ok? If I go to Hoosiers later on, I can run 245/275s... or maybe Michelin will someday make more than one tire (PS2s) that fits our stock sizes!

The sizes that Jim recommends will work fine, that is exactly what I run and I have no issues on the track. I do recommend getting them warmed up as well as start your pressures low, around 30psi front and 31 or 32psi rear and you'll handle wonderfully on the track.
GTSCayman... we haven't put them on yet - hopefully this weekend and I should have a couple pics from the PCA TT. I'm having problems with the spacers that are req'd on the rear. They don't seem to fit the Enkei wheels. The centerbore is smaller on the wheel than the spacer lip (or hubcentric portion). Jim's actually working on that issue for me now.
K-Man... Jim did say that you used that size w/ no problems. We ended up getting some used RA1s from the member here that sold us the Enkei's so we'll be using those for the time being. Do you recommend the same starting pressures for the Toyos?

Actually, RA-1s like about 40 psi hot. I start with 35 psi front/40 psi rear, and vent some as they heat up, to about 39 psi front / 41 psi rear. I think you'll LOVE the RA-1s. I've run both MPSCs and RA-1s on the track and like the grip of the RA-1s better, but did get more days use out of the MPSCs.
Talk to Mooty, he's got as much experience with these as any!
gemars... one of the instructors in our region recommended heating them and keeping them at 36 - worked very well for us. The tires felt awesome and my times showed it.
gtscayman... there are pics out on tne Maverick Region PCA website, but the pics are protected so I cant download or paste them here. It's the only Cayman in the pics (Cobalt) and there are a couple of good pics showing the wheels. I think they look even better in person.
