Wheel Locks

One thing that is scaring me about getting 19" turbo wheels (and the cayman in general) is theft. I live in a community and we have a parking garage. There are many nice cars here in the 60k+ range, but I am still worried. My neighbor had his car on blocks one day, but I heard he didnt have wheel locks. I live on the 4th floor so I suspect these guys are not deterred easily.

I saw the Boothe design, but I dont think those chrome ones would go with the turbo wheel. I am thinking of adding a second wheel lock as someone mentioned that this would prevent one from prying the last one off.

Are there some better ideas out there? Perhaps more "customized" wheel locks that make it difficult to have a key for exist out there? I read this issue about Xenon light theft and I am just worried in general about theft of the lights, car, wheels. Sucks I dont have a garage and is making me think twice about getting a nicely optioned CS.

Where do you live? I would think the Boothe Design locks would go great because the chrome bolts would go well with the turbo wheels which have a shiny finish to them much like chrome.

I am shying away from the Boothe ones because my thought is want a theft to see he is up against a problem ahead of time. Tough call on that, but I guess its just the way I feel about it.

Sucks that we should have to even have to worry about these things, but I guess thats life. I live near Dallas in a pretty good area. Most of the areas around me have community garage parking and there are no individual unit garages...this has been on my mind for some time. But like I said, there are some nice cars here, vipers, ferrari, porsche (cayman and 911), you get the point. The only one that I KNOW of that had the wheels stolen were some huge wheels on an SUV that didnt have wheel locks. Maybe it was just easy pickings for someone.

Those turbo wheels look so nice...hard to imagine going with the stock wheels. I dont care at all for them on the stock CS. I actually like the C wheels better.

There's a big market for SUV wheels unless, like the CS' turbo wheels, they fit a very limited number of cars. Porsche wheels are not easily marketable by a thief & aren't worth a whole lot. Theft of Porsche wheels are rare. I wouldn't be concerned about the SUV incident. The oem wheel locks are very secure & make removal quite time consuming & noisy.

Likewise Porsche thefts (as a % of Porsches sold) are among the lowest of any make.

That said, if a pro really wants your car, he'll get it. But, w/the same time & risk he can steal far more marketable exotics. I wouldn't loose sleep worrying. But, then, my cars are garaged most of the time.

This is good info, makes me feel a little better about it. I was kind of wondering why they dont put a serial number or something wheels. Maybe it wouldnt do any good, but at least you could tell if they were hot and it would be harder to sell them.

Whats wrong with the Porsche locking nuts? I lost my adapter and had to buy a new one, and it took the guy from Porsche and myself quite some time to try all the keys to see which one fitted my car (before ordering a new locking nut adapter FROM GERMANY). The star shaped adapters look the same, but they are not. There are a whole heap of them. Mine was number 57. I doubt anyone would be able to get their hands on the whole set of adapters - so I think your wheels are safe!

Here's 1 among several old threads discussing theft. Simply, you should be far more worried about theft if you were buying a Chevy.

How hard is it to steal a Cayman.??

Well its not so much theft, but more the wheels than anything...probably followed by the Xenon lights. Both of those would make the care undrivable and leave you in a sticky situation. Also, the insurance company has "odd" rules about wheel theft.

I think I will talk to Porsche about adding a second wheel lock though just for piece of mind.

Boothe has two options on their wheel locks. Chrome and Black Chrome. Call Ralph up and check it out. I like them both. In fact I just bought a set today for my new set of wheels.

I had no idea that the locking nuts were different, let alone that there were at least 57 different types. That makes me feel even better about my OEM wheel locks.

Thanks for the info, this is the new thing I learned today.

Haha...what good would they be if they were all the same? You could just buy one off ebay, the dealer, or borrow from your buddy with a Porsche. Actually I would feel better if there 100-200 different types.

It is very easy to steal wheels with locks if noise isn't an issue or you have enough friends to make it a quick job. Thief takes a socket that is just a bit too small to fit the lock and then hammers it on (stripped nut tool works as well). Removes the lock like any other lug bolt and makes off with your wheels. They need a socket for each bolt as they won't be coming off. It is noisy but quick. I think using more than one lock is a good deterrent.

Very true, I just never gave it any thought.
