Hey, just about to order my winter wheels and pay a whole bunch of money for the Tire Pressure Monitors that will sit on the inside of each rim. I really, really, don't care for these especially on my winter wheels, but I've heard I'll get a blinking light on my dash all day long if I don't get them. Is there ANY way around this - any way to turn off the system of deactivate it for the winter? Or do I have to shill out the money for them?
I really don't believe there is and honestly i cant justify $400 for it... I don't have them in my current set of wheels. You get the error when you first get in the car, clear it, and only the yellow light and red exclamation mark in the dash remain; I don't mind it.
(I am getting ready to prepare a set of wheels for DE's and
am not planning to use the TPMS sensors (at $400+ more $$$).
Thanks el mucho...
- Mark
TPMS
TPMS - The Tire Pressure Monitoring System provides early warning of any drop in pressure by continuously monitoring the pressure in each tire and alerting you in the onboard computer display in the event of a pressure deficiency. It communicates the exact pressure of each tire and/or their deviation from ideal pressure. This does away with the need for regular air pressure checks at the service station, which often prove highly inconvenient.

By clear it he doesn't really mean clear it. He means you change the warning message to a red exclamation mark, but you'll still have lights on your dash. It's like when you're running low on fuel and it says 'Consider remaining range' and you pull back on the stalk and the message goes away and you get a little red exclamation mark instead.
I take it you'd get that little red exclamation mark and a little yellow TPMS specific light on the dash always lighting up, plus a warning beep when you start the car? I don't really want to have to see all that stuff constanly on my dash. I think I'll get the TPMS unless anyone else knows of a surfire way to reprogram it off for the winter.

It is a safety tool. Would you change out other safety features just because it might cost a bit? Having it could save more than it costs if you have a puncture this winter.
As an optional function, I totally agree... As a mandatory and costly requirement made by Porsche to its good thinking and capable customers, it is completely insulting and arrogant. I do not require, nor ask for Porche's or anyone's assistance or insistence to help me in this manner. This is NOT a traditional nor required feature for any automaker to impose upon its customers.

Actually, TPMSis a required feature -- it's a US federal requirement for all 2007 or later cars. So, to be fair to Porsche, it wasn't their decision to make it mandatory in the US; don't know about other countries, though.

Well it's a moot point now. I just ordered my winter wheels from Wheel Enhancement with the TPMS installed.
I went with the 17" Cayman rims (take-offs) with Porsche recommended ContiWinterSport tires. The tires are great. I had them on my Boxster and they're not a deep snow tire, but they're great in light snow and slush and are really good on cold sub zero roads. They corner nearly as well as the summer tires. No sidewall flex.
Shipped to Toronto all in about $2,500.

Nobody gives you more ways to get the look you want:
1. Purchase new Porsche Factory alloys.
2. Purchase like-new used or restored Porsche alloys from us.
3. Have us refinish your Factory alloys. We restore, anodize, polish and chrome plate.
4. Purchase our aftermarket wheels--we offer the very best, including Kinesis, Fikse, BBS, HRE and Champion to name a few.
5. Exchange your straight, true Factory alloys for Factory alloys pre-finished the way you want.
6. Exchange your scratched/curb damaged Factory alloys for new or refinished Factory Alloys.
7. Trade in your straight, true Factory alloys for aftermarket or Factory wheels. http://www.wheelenhancement.com

Thanks BillC, for adding to my sometimes reluctant education!
