Is PASM necessary for 19-inch wheels?

Hi Cayman S owners,

I'm writing from Tokyo. I've placed an order for a Cayman S that will arrive next May. I want the 19-inch wheels. My salesperson says that if you put in 19-inch wheels, PASM should also be installed. Is it an absolute necessity?

I have a non-PASM car with 19 inch wheels and I can tell you that PASM is absolutely not a necessity for me. Then again, I live in Southern California and the roads here are pretty smooth most of the time.

That being said, I would probably add PASM if I were going to order the car again. I tried to save some money by leaving off PASM, PCM and Sport Chrono, but I ended up getting lowering springs (which I am getting ready to replace with PSS9s), retrofitting PCM, and the Softronic setup.

To answer your question, it's not an absolute necessity.

I have 19 inch wheels on my CS, no PASM, and while driving through the crappy streets of LA can be kind of rough at times, it hasn't bothered me.

I haven't had a chance to spend time to really try out PASM, so I can't tell you how much difference it makes.

Lot of cra.p roads around here, and I have no complaints, running on 19's without PASM.

But PASM is a pretty cool trick. You don't need it, but why not get it because you want it? If I'd ordered, I probably would've gotten it, though as it is I'll probably go JIC's in the next two years, and probably would have anyway.

SC is obsoleted by the current and coming generations of aftermarket firmware, particularly Softronic. And the wart really is kinna silly.

PCM is absolutely state of the art for circa 1945. Worth at least $800. Unfortunately Porsche wants about four times that.

Unfortunately I think you are going to have a to drive a car with PASM and determine for yourself. I personally think PASM is a must for 19 wheels (at least on the roads around where I live). I drove both and decided I would not like the 19's on without PASM on a daily driven car. Weekend fun toy, that would be different.

I drove all year on 19's using the PASM whenever I could on the windy roads home. This month I switch to 18" S wheels with Yokohama Advan S4 all-season tires. The 18's ride quieter and these tires handle the wet weather well. But I do perfer driving on the 19's when I am using the PASM system otherwise I find the 18's are more comfortable.
Good Luck I don't think you can make a bad choice either way.

I thank you All who have replied to my first post ever after I joined the Club yesterday!

I think I'll put PASM in because of the general overall impression I got from your replies. I am going test drive one with and without PASM this weekend. One important element is with PASM, the car's height is lowered by 10mm. I think it is important for looks (the gap between the fender and flatter tires will look kind of awkward and the fact that lowering it later on is additional work and cost. Thank All again!!

In Tokyo main city the roads are always being reconstructed IIRC . Like Singapore. Without PASM here I will have severe comfort issues.
