Painting wheels - recommendations needed.

Hi: I got a set of 18" Boxster S wheels off e-bay. Wheels are exactly what I wanted, but they are more scratched than I expected. I will most likely paint them.

What color would you recommend. Boxster S special edition wheels are black, but the car is Orange...

My car is Black (Cayman 2.7) with gray interior.

Hvae you seen a picture of a Cayman with painted wheels that looked nice?

Maybe consider powder coating them? Its more durable than paint and most powder coating shops can do any color or finish you want.

A good shop charges you by the size of the batch, and if they have a big enough machine they can do all four wheels in one batch and they will all match perfectly and it will be pretty cheap.

Personally I would go with traditional grey/silver wheels or possibly a darker grey or gunmetal grey.

I don't like black on black, it makes the wheels disappear.

You could do the centers darker and the lip/edge lighter.

powdercoat is not necessarily more durable than paint. powder has a tendancy to chip and paint will scratch.

The good part about paint is that minor scratches can be buffed out just like your car....damage to powder you are stuck with.

Also the process of powder coating requires the wheel (in most cases and if done properly with out cutting corners) to be 100% sandblasted and then the baking process exposes the wheel to temps. in excess of 450 degress which is never good for metal strength.

I recommend paint as it allows you to do two tone paint schemes and also allows you to have a much larger choice of colors.

We offer custom color options on all of our wheels finished to the customers request.

In the "good old days" when the wheels on my 911 got messed up I touch them up with a can of silver spray paint from Pep Boys.
