anyone had problems with their oem continental tires? my left rear shreaded the inside sidewall on the freeway. no road hazard damage to the tire--nails, punctures, tread separations--to cause the failure. Checked the ntsb logs and there are quite a few sidewall failures. members should be warned if they still have their conti tires. this tire failed at 65 mph at only 5600 miles. what about going faster or on the track? they are dangerous and continental won't warranty them. i even talked to the rep. at the sema show and got no where. the dealer was not helpful and can't even find a real continental dealer in town--salt lake city--that knew anything about the tire.
continental is now on my list of no-purchase tires along with firestone and bridgestone. continental is also in an embroiled recall bigger than the firestone brewhaha.
Conti's are touring tires, made for comfort and low noise, thats generally the reputation that they have. If thats what you like and how you use em, they're good tires.
I'm really po'd at my contis - they are no where near the performance of the Michelin Pilots. And, unlike some others here, mine wore down pretty quickly. I'm not a fan.
I have never driven a Conti tire that I liked. Their sedan tires are mushy and squeel at the sight of a corner. Their sports car tires are not much better. They were on my C4S when I picked it up. They were only 3 years old and dry rotting and terminally flat spotted. I have my fingers crossed that they are NOT on my Cayman when I take delivery next week.
My CS came with Conti's on my 19 inch rims. They worked OK, but wore out quickly from tracking the car. Eventually corded the front outside edges. Lucky they didn't come apart when I was cornering at 120 MPH.
I think there are better tires than the Sport Contact but I don't think they are a bad tire. The tires are not going to blow out for no reason no matter how poorly the tire handles. Bridgestone makes the best tires in the world in my opinon. They have more patends on tire technology than all the other tire manufacturers. They got caught up in a Ford problem. After they stopped selling to Ford their problems went away.
For a tire to blow out ther has to be a cause. If the tire was shredded you may not be able to find the cause. Normally it is caused by low air pressure and then heat builds up in the tire and the heat causes the tire to blow out the sidewall. With low profile tires with stiff sidewall it is very difficult to tell when the tires are low.

Don't leave it to chance. Address it now & get the tires you want.
Tell your dealer you want your car delivered with whichever of the other oem brand tires you want. They should accomodate your request assuming they've got another car wi
