Tire Question

I'm currently trying to decide between getting a base cayman or a BMW 135i or 335i. I guess I see pros and cons for each vehicle. It seems there is a lot of negative comment on various internet sites concerning the BMW's run flat tires. Those comments complain about their harsh ride, high cost, trouble finding replacements and limited life. I was wondering if the cayman has run flats and if so what everyone's experience has been with them. Thanks.

the cayman doesn't come with run flats. when you get a flat, you just use this flat tire repair kit that comes with the car.

Just about all OE run-flats have the same complaints you mention but it’s not that hard to change them out to regular tires.

RFs in BMWs (I had a MINI) are about the first thing people change (at least on MINIs). They ride harsh, have poor traction, and are much more expensive than aftermarket.

OTH, Caymans usually come with PS2s or something similar and the price is $$$.

Had a Z4; just bought a Cayman. I did not find the run flats to be the liability that some claim. BMW does claim that you cannot repair the run flats but I found them readily available. Porsche claims that you cannot repair flats on the Michelins on the Cayman, and the tires are not cheap.

At least with the run flats, you could go up to 200 miles to get a replacement. I am less confident that the goop and air compressor that Porsche provides will get me to a replacement.

As stated above the Cayman does not come with run flats, they are not even an option. The Cayman 2.7 comes standard with 17" wheels. The 17" tires provide a very nice ride quality, good handling and lower cost than 18s or 19s.

Not only are run flats not optional, a spare tire option (which can be obtained in other countries), is not an option in the US. If you want a spare you have to buy the components ala carte from Porsche and put it together yourself. I can't help believing it is because of some liability issues, and/or Porsche is motivated by the $$ savings.

Like others have posted you can go away from the run flat tires and there are a number of options in performance tires. I would not let that be the deal breaker either way.
If I can help with the tires options let me know.

Sports car or sedan, 2 seats or more? Tires should not be that big a factor IMHO.

BTW PS2's can be repaired. I have more than 10,000 miles (including several autocrosses) on a right rear that got 2 large nails early on. Never a problem so far. Left the nails in to get to the repair site 40 miles away with very little loss of air pressure. I did stop to check half way there, carried an air tank just in case and had my wife follow. Did not use the supplied "goop" sealant.
