Question TPMS confused - displaying 4 flat tires - any way out?

I had my Cayman-S on the track (Thunderhill - CA) yesterday for the first time . Air temps were over 105°F, tires getting very squishy after 6-8 laps. Hot. Very hot.

Anyway, I was playing with tire pressures all day trying to get a handle on the right starting pressure to give me good track pressure. At one point i dropped pretty low for a short time, then brought them back up.

I got a few "low pressure" warnings throughout the day (no surprise), then starting getting "flat tyre" warnings. The tires obviously had plenty of air based on the hand gauges I was using.

My TPMS is now displaying the yellow tire warning and the red ! on the dash, insisting that I now have 4 flat tires.

I've read the manual, searched online and in the forums, and have reset the TPMS 3 times to "Summer Tyres" setting - all with no luck.

Any idea what's up with this? Anyone seen this before after tracking their Cayman?

Is there a way to kick the TPMS back into proper operation?

Thanks!

Bruce

I have no expirience with TPMS, but I would guess that maybe the sensors overheated or something!

If resetting doesn't do the trick you might have a bad module that will require warranty replacement. If after an overnight rest it still doesn't work I think that will be the answer. Mine has stopped working a couple of times after frequently shutting the car down and starting up but it has always returned.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to play with it some more today - change some airpressures, reset, and see if it comes back to life. If not, I'd guess that you are correct and some box needs to be replaced. Does anyone know what Porsche's warranty replacement policy is for things that break while at the racetrack? Should I just forget to mention that part of the story?

I'm sure that you do know that the car has to be moving when re-setting the TPMS but just in case...and I doubt the track even had anything to do with the failure other than than starting and re-starting. The module is like a computer and probably got confused. But it is an easy job for the dealer to replace it or perhaps "re-boot" its mind.

I have the exact same problem. I ran a DE today and before going set cold pressures at 34F and 36R. After the first session my fronts were about 43 hot and rears at 45 hot. I dropped pressures around to set at 38F and 39R. After the second session, the day had warmed somewhat, I was still in the mid 40s. Dropped them again to my target. After the third session they were around 38 and 39 so I left them alone. While coloing off between the 3rd and 4th session, I got the flat tire warning indicating that the rears were -7 lbs. This warning remained lit all the way home. I am expecting that when I air up the tires after the DE weekend that the TPMS will return to normal.

Hello Silicontraption....
I was the other Cayman at Thunderhill Thursday... nice to see another local on the CCnet... Yep, I had the same thing happen -- due to bleeding out so much air for the tire temp increase. Search other threads and you'll find a lot of information on this (anoying) function. Check the owners manual for resetting.. but I think the car needs to be stationary to get to the correct menu option. Once you trigger the resetting, the TPMS clears the warning light... as I recall.

may not be a help , but when i switched to my summer tires , the change required the system to relearn , took 15 miles before system warning lights went out .

Following up on my earlier post, after the DE weekend I set the tire pressures to factory recommended pressures and the TPMS warnings went away.
