Question "Tires for Life" protection/insurance program

I've asked about a tire/road hazard insurance program on a previous forum. There were several people who've replied about such programs that they've bought from their dealers. My dealer didn't offer such a program and I've inquired other dealers about purchasing such a program, but they said they could only offer such a program to people who buy cars from their own respective dealerships. So, finally after a long search, someone told me about this "tires for life" program. I just got off of the phone with the Boardwalk Porsche salesman and I wanted to let fellow Cayman owners know about this program (if they're interested and have been looking for such) and to inquire others more experienced and wiser than I as to what they think about the policy...i.e. is it worth all the $$$$?

Key points: (this is what he told me over the phone, so please don't think it's set in stone)
1) Company offering this is: Millenium Automotive Protection Plan
2) Cost: $4399 no tax - one time fee
3) Expenses you pay: tire rotation (which won't occur with our cars since the front and rear ones are of different sizes) and tire inspection (by any mechanic) every 6000 miles (they need to see an invoice from the mechanic - does not need to be a Porsche specialist, I asked about that)
4) You will get new tires once they reach 3/32.
5) Automatic transmissions cost $600 more.
6) Aftermarket wheels cost $600 more.
7) Policy covers flats, nails, towing, and sidewalls of tires. Also covers rims (if they're scuffed, they will touch it up, but if it's been in an accident (no matter whose fault) they will replace the rim.
8) Policy covers all glass (windshield cracks etc...), battery, wiperblades, and exterior lights (xenons not covered).
9) 30 day cancellation policy

So guys, is this worth it? I generally feel that any insurance policy sold only benefits the salespeople. But I'm thinking about using mine as a 3-4 times a week commuter vehicle along I80 in the SF Bay Area (70 miles a day) besides any weekend trips. I also plan on keeping my car until it reaches a cult collector status. The salesman said that based on rear tire prices of $325-375 and front tires of $275-325, it would take about 3.5 sets of tires to break even if you don't other parts of the coverage policy. Tell me what you guys think!! I'd appreciate your input in helping me think through this $4400 investment/insurance. Thanks in advance.

Jim

I just recently purchased my CS at Boardwalk and went with the Gold Package tires for life...I asked for some help and they took 5% off..about 3800.00 and now I am driving the car differently than would have otherwise...

Silentrun,

Thanks for your reply. Good to know that a Caymanclub member bought it recently. I was worried that I might be missing something in the numbers or missing certain trains of thoughts about this. $3800 hmmmm that's more reasonable than $4400. I will inquire about that.

Cheers,

Jim

I would need to see the fine print, and understand who insures them. What happens if they go belly up?

I think you're screwed if the insurance company goes belly up or you total your car.

Take the $3800 - $4400 - whatever and put it in your Credit Union account with the money you would have spent on "extended warranties", "service protection plans", "road hazard warranties" etc. and you will be well ahead of the pack. Over the long run you will never beat the insurance companies actuaries.

My rationale was fairly simple, the CS is a four year lease, and if I drive autocross, DE, and hard on the streets, I am going to go through about 5 sets of tires...if the insurance company fails..well then the dealership and I will talk...now take into account the insurance company also takes care of the battery (prorated) bulbs, wipers and towing its adding up. Is the insurance company there to make money...yes...but I can drive the car differently than otherwise..
