TPMS - unsure about answer from service dealer

Guys,

I'm asking this question for a work colleague with a Cayman. (I'm trying to get him to join the CC) If his TPMS read -13 in left rear tire in a new Cayman (other tires are okay)with about 1400 miles but the manual check of the pressures was normal (35) in both rear tires, wouldn't you think that it would be a problem with the TPMS sensor? A service person over the phone said to zero out the TPMS by adding 13lbs of air in the tire (even if the manual check read that it was normal) because the manual check doesn't factor in temperatures etc... The service person said there was a flat, but examination of the tire doesn't reveal anything and pressing on the tire doesn't suggest a flat. Car drives fine, no swerving or leaning. The service person said that the TPMS is really intelligent and that the manual pressure monitor!

Do you buy what the service person stated?
Any other suggestions what can be done about this -13 reading?

Thanks

The service person is not knowledgeable. TPMS is very good but sometimes does mess up. If the tire does not have a leak, try re-setting TPMS per the process described in the Owner's Manual. Some have had good luck by over inflating and then reducing pressure to the correct amount. Failing all of that it sounds like a bad sensor in the wheel or the TPMS module itself. The car is still under warranty so both should be addressed by the dealer without them giving the owner any "story". (there are several threads that you should as well)

Good luck with the warranty route. My TPMS malfunctioned two months after I bought the car. I replaced my summer tires with winter ties and while the pressure gage seemed to work correctly, the warning lights would not go off. The Tire Rack installer said it was a problem with lack of updated software from Porsche. So I took it into my dealership who promptly charged me $90 to "put on the computer" and end the warning lights.

samr46 could that have been due to your having a third party (Tire Rack) involved in the installation? I'm not aware of any update to the software (not that there isn't any) but the story from your installer seems a bit fishy. Warranty should cover the issue unless someone else messed something up. Maybe the installer owes you $90?

I got new TPMS sensors from Tire Rack; they worked out of the box. They are identical to the Porsche OE sensor and carry the same model number but a different color (orange instead of silver). Beru sensors don't have to be activated like some other brands. As long as they are installed to specs, you just reset your TPMS settings to put them into learning mode and drive around for 45 minutes for the readings to show up.

Do you mean these?

Orange Electronic Retro-Fit Tire Pressure Monitoring System Spare Sensor

Only $31 compared with $104 for the stock ones. That's a big difference and good news if they work with the car. My CF wheels are inbound and I was wondering if I should go the $416 extra for the OEM sensors. Now if these are the same then that's great news.

No... just the color is orange, they are made by Beru and cost ~$80 each. Still cheaper than most dealers. It was 367 shipped for a set of 4, including valve stems, ordered through Jim@Tirerack.

Just as well I checked.... I will also check my local parts guy as most of the time he will discount parts.

I can't wait for my wheels.

I noticed your message as I was researching a question about the TPMS. Could you tell me how or where I can get the info to reset or relearn for the TPMS. I'm having wide differences between tire gauge numbers and the TPMS numbers.

Thx, CaymanSGS
