It is more for looks. People want that deep lip look in the back to give their cars that mean wide predatory stance. I had Radenergie R10s on my M3 and the 4 inch lip in the back gave it a really awesome stance. Backside was it was really heavy and made my pre-supercharged M3 slow. I sold 'em and now running the stock look.

Thanks for the info. Now you've got me wondering why a "phat" lip would be more weight. It seems to me the width of the wheel doesn't change, only the location of the "face" is different.
I LOOOOOOVE the deep lip on the rims. I have rims on my other car that have a nice lip to them and it just looks so good.
What I can suggest to you is shop around a lot, find out what all the wheels weigh. I found it that it was not hard to find well made light weight wheel with a deeper lip, they were just more expensive. So as long as you are willing to spend the $$$, you can find some awesome product that will not hurt your performance.

I agree with MrClean on the forged Champion wheels and went with them about a 1000 miles ago.The 19" wheel weight is much lighter than the stock Cayman S wheels and even with the addition of H&R lowering springs(no PASM) the ride and handling is way better than stock.Well worth the price of admission and the look is awesome!
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Can you tell us where you got these and exactly what sizes....I am looking for similar wheels, maybe slightly different style. I am always curious the exact specs of the wheels AND tire.
Kevin the source of the wheels is Champion Motorsport in Florida website www.championmotorsport.com Fronts are 19x8 offset ET53 Rears are 19x10 offset ET36 . Tires fronts 235/35/ZR19 Rears 275/30/ZR19. No spacers required just mount and go after proper alignment of course. Hope this helps you.
