Weird noise

Here's a wee poser for the more knowledgeable out there............
I had to sit in my car for half an hour while my wife was shopping. The key was in the ignition but nothing was turned on, including the radio. Every 5 minutes or so I heard a noise from the dashboard - a bit like a CD ejecting or hard drive booting, just for a second or so. I couldn't locate the source and now its irritating me that I cant figure it out. Any ideas.
While I'm whinging, has anyone else noticed that the metal guards on the back of the brake disc's seem to have been designed by Gillette? They cut my hands to bits every time I clean the wheels - must get a suitable brush, I guess!

Dave

I took your statement literally at first, picturing the brand logo on the guard wondering why Gillette would diversify into automotive, until I read the next sentence. Thanks for a good laugh....

Haha I know what hes talkin about! I now no longer clean that area of the car. Too many paper-diskbrake-cuts on my hands.

Someone else pointed out these finger savers. http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=15736
They do the job nicely. Probably cost too much to ship to your part of the planet though.

May or may not be relevant:

Recently my in-dash CD player broke and the dealership had to replace it. One of the quirky things it did while it refused to play CD's (or cough up the one that was in there) was make sounds similar to the ones you described. Would usually happen before I inserted the key.

Don't leave the key in the ignition; it activates systems and will run down your battery.

Simple solution to avoid cutting your hands up on the brake shields.....wear mechanics gloves or light duty garden gloves. I used to cut myself all the time until a light bulb appeared over my head! Works like a charm...no more cuts. There are also task specific brushes that aid in the cleaning process. Just be careful of those that look like toilet brushes as the metal in them used to hold the bristles can scratch.

As far as the noise...I have heard the same thing coming from the same area. Sounds like the CD cueing up or something...not quite sure though.

Mine makes the same noise each time I put the key in. Sounds like the dash CD 'spins' up, even though it's not playing.

Believe it our not, but I use a toilet bowl brush! I was walking down the aisle of my local grocery store one day and a light bulb when on (in my head) when I passed those brushes. They come in various shapes but they all have in common a long handle. Perfect for shoving into the recesses of the wheels!

Those Gillette blades you mentioned do slice the brushes up after 6 or so uses, but at 99 cents a pop that's not an issue.

Give it a try.

I have NAV. Noise(s) went away when they replaced the unit.
