Firstly I will say that in general I have found my local main dealer to be very helpful, everyone I have come into contact with from reception through to sale and service department have gone out of their way to be helpful, polite and courteous.
However...... I was just a little surprised that 10 days-after picking up my 06 CS, the dash light informed me that in 25 days it needed a service. Wow, now I have had some unusual cars, the worst (so to speak) being a Maserati that had 3,000 mile service interval, but every 25 days, that's going some. So called my new best friend aka the sales guy who said he would look into it, which good as his word he did.
Appears car had been on forecourt so long its 2 year (1st !) service had become due and had somehow slipped through the net - so, no big deal (other than having to drive back to deader to drop it off and collect later), booked car in for (free) service. It was really only while driving a (base model) 07 service Cayman that it occurred to me how much more stable it felt than mine at speed. First thought was perhaps it was down to the wind ( it was a blustery day) but upon getting back into mind I really did sense something was not quite right. Of course I now start to panic arghh, perhaps it had been in a previous accident, that was why it was ‘on the forecourt’ for so long....
Anyhow, to cut a long story short I found out what the issue was, thankfully its not to cars welded together (it does happen), but simply tyre pressures, back left was running at 28psi, back right at 38psi. So, not terribly reassuring that something that basic was missed and now I find myself wondering what else might have been ‘overlooked’, if not now, then previously. Anyone else had any less then wonderful experiences with mail stealer, or was that really just a bit of bad luck?
Kez, Dealers are just that, dealers, I bet your salesman’s your best friend. He just got you to part with 30-35-40 grand, and of course they should have serviced your car before you picked it up….and when they did, they should have checked through a checklist to make sure all the jobs where done. Ask, your friend, for the checklist from the service dept. It should not only be available, but you should have got a copy in your service book, which they did of course STAMP ???
My car just had it’s first service at 2 years old and if I’d done what they wanted me to. It would have cost >3k…..!! They charged me £260 and it still came back overfilled with oil !! ....ar*eholes
In our part of the world round Manchester we have 2 dealers, Wilmslow and Bolton. Now they are both owned by the same Group “Pendragon” and the difference between the two is unbelievable. If you don’t say Porsha and dress in shirt, tie and suit don’t go to Wilmslow, cause they wont even speak to you,...... how mad is that.
Their loss in my opinion, but that’s the way it is. Obviously it’s good to have a contact within a dealership, but just be a little careful as stated above, that he’s not just your friend because you’ve parted with wads of cash !! from which, he of course gets PAID !!
Kez, both issues due to OPC errors despite charging top prices.
No excuse really and not a surprise as Tess says some main dealers are good and other are not.
Thanks Guys, not sure if this is reassuring (ie, was not singled out for 'special' treatment) or sad (how much DO you have to spend on a car to get what you pay for!?!).
Anyhow, spent 15 mins crawling over the car in the garage last night, thankfully service book has been stamped, both 20k mile service (although mileage is under 7k) plus two year brake-fluid change, dread to think what that might have cost had I been paying).
One thing that did puzzle me is that I see the dealer has now changed oil from (Porsche specified) Mobil 1 to Castrol TXT - why? I guess I should be thankful for the litre left in the front boot (along with its little Velcro holder - nice touch) but had I not noticed I would have assumed the Mobile 1 sticker under the oil filler cover was still applicable - anyone else come across this, had always believed that M1 was the best you could buy, cleary Porsche do and I guess that have a tad more experience than a local sgarage?!
Once again, am delighted to have found this place, better put together than any other enthusiast forum I have seen, and loads of friendly contributors which at the end of the day is really what makes or breaks it
Brake Fluid Change is charged at £100, and I took my own Mobil One, they knocked £150 off the service bill ??? a little profit there then as it cost me £25per 5L container and they actually gave me the 2L that was left (didn't come back Velcro’d in though)
From a previous thread discussing Service: "they quoted me the same price for the service and then knocked £150 off when I said I'm supplying the Oil, so it cost me 260 something.....they then rang me up 4 times through the day with..."Your rear tyres are down to 4mm, we can fit new for £265 each" No thank you....." Your front disc's are cracked, we can fit new for £658 front and £725 rear"...no thank you "your air con requires a refresh" oh yea what do you do for that then, "we spray sweet smelling stuff in your vents and charge you £58 for the pleasure, oh and while were at it you wiper blades arn't 100% efficient and they are £52 for the pair"........so if I’d just said yes to everything the first service would have cost me £2800.00, how many people just say yes??????? quite a few I'd wager. "
I always thought there was a long standing relationship between Mobil 1 and Porsche, but I presume the dealers can use any oil they wish as long as it conforms to the required spec.
I'd bet it doesn't make the fixed price service cheaper even though Mobil 1 has gotta be more expensive than Castol TXT....

I think using another brand of engine oil for our beloved motor is a bit naughty!! Our Porsche handbook specified Mobil One cause it is quite unique. I can't think of another brand of oil that covers 0-40w. That's why it costs more! When I brought my car in 2 months ago for the 1st service, I specified Mobil One oil which also appeared on my receipt when I handed over my £450+ pounds. They also change my brake fluid which need to be done every 2 years!
If you want to be sure, do what Tess do, bring your own Mobil One. This way, you know you are feeding the Croc with the very best oil!
It is very cheap in Costco!!!
Just had a second look, and oil is in in fact Castrol Softec 5w40 TXT - looking around on the net seems both Bristol and Cardiff dealers (same owners so perhaps not surprising) recommended it as its not quite so thin as Mobile 1, ironically also not readily available in the UK. Catrols less then informative UK sites does not even list it as a product, so that may explain the free litre in trunk? - but at least its a 100% synthetic oil and not some kind of 'cracked' hybrid version. Least I think that's good.....
Opps, just found a single litre for sale eon feaBay - £20.00,
I'd be interested what Porsche (uk or worldwide) have to say regarging use of a different oil.
Incidentally VW have changed the spec of their longlife engine oil from 0w40 Castrol Longlife III to 5w40 Castrol Edge, so perhaps there is a benefit somewhere along the line....

Most wear and tear in the engine is done when you start your car. (This is more so for someone like me who hardly use the Croc!) Obviously, the thinner the oil, the quicker it gets to the bits that need lubricating. However, it will mean you need to keep a close eye on the engine oil level cause you may need refill it a bit more often. That might be why some dealer decide to use Castrol. Personally, I think they are trying to cut cost cause they did not pass on their saving to their customer. The standard charge for a routine service will still be the same!
Good point Andy, found Castrol's sale blurb on the oil and they claim it has better protection during start up period, but then again they say that about the Magnatec oil they produce.
Also note that on Packaging it only lists for advanced engine use (guess that rules out any clockwork ones) and 'Approved by' three manufactures, VW, BMW and Porsche, so my guess is they are willing to do a 'deal' with bulk users in order to establish a market.
No harm in that, and no different than say a conventional ad campaign, and my guess is cheeper, interesting eh....
